Where to find the VIN on a Kia Optima JF

Quick answer

Kia’s US owner’s manuals for the Kia Optima JF (2016–2019 petrol, 2017–2020 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid) give the VIN in three places. A plate on top of the dashboard is read from outside through the windscreen, on the driver’s side. A vehicle certification label sits on the driver’s-side centre pillar, seen with the front door open. The third place depends on the drivetrain: petrol cars have the number punched on the bulkhead at the back of the engine bay, which Kia calls “the front side wall of the engine room”, while the Optima Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid have it punched into the floor under the passenger seat. We found no Gulf-market Optima JF manual, so a UAE car’s places are not confirmed by Kia. Whatever the market, every VIN the car carries and the registration card must show the same 17 characters.

The eight Kia owner’s manuals behind this page

We read the identification page, wording and drawings, in eight US-market manuals on Kia’s owner’s-manual site: the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Optima, and the 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 Optima Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid. The site has no 2020 petrol manual. All eight word the plate and label identically; only the punched number moves, from engine bay (petrol) to cabin floor (hybrids). None labels any place “if equipped”.

No official source we found shows where a Gulf-market Optima JF carries its VIN: Kia’s owner’s-manual site lists Optima manuals for the United States only, and we found no Gulf or general-market edition elsewhere. Check every place below, and if one is bare, ask Al Tayer Motors, which Kia’s UAE website names as exclusive importer-distributor (Premier Motors in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain), where Kia marks that VIN.

Place 1: the plate you read through the windscreen

Diagram of a Kia Optima JF four-door saloon seen from the left, marker 1 highlighted: the VIN plate on top of the dashboard at the foot of the windscreen on the driver’s side, read from outside; squares mark the drivetrain-dependent places (bulkhead on petrol cars, floor on hybrids, dashed on the far side); marker 4 is the centre-pillar label (door open)
Place 1, driver’s side: the VIN plate on top of the dashboard at the foot of the windscreen. Circles mark places every manual gives; squares mark places that depend on the drivetrain; the dashed marker is on the far side. · Diagram: VINCheckr · Diagram, not to scale

All eight manuals say: “The VIN is also on a plate attached to the top of the dashboard. The number on the plate can easily be seen through the windshield from outside.” Kia’s drawing (OUM084005) shows a small plate under the glass at the foot of the windscreen, beside the pillar, with no side marked. The side comes from each manual’s US-only roadside-assistance page: “The VIN can be found on the dash of your vehicle on the driver’s side”, the left on a UAE car.

For a US-market car, title 49 of the US Code of Federal Regulations, Part 565 (49 CFR Part 565), requires the VIN to be readable through the glass beside the left windscreen pillar; the rule covers US-market cars only.

Place 2, petrol cars: the stamping behind the engine

Diagram of a Kia Optima JF four-door saloon seen from the left, marker 2 highlighted: on petrol cars the VIN punched on the bulkhead at the back of the engine bay, under the bonnet below the windscreen; marker 3 dashed on the far side (floor under the passenger seat, hybrids); marker 4 on the driver’s-side centre pillar (door open)
Place 2, petrol cars only: the VIN punched on the bulkhead at the back of the engine bay, under the bonnet below the windscreen. Kia’s drawing marks no side. Squares: places that depend on the drivetrain. · Diagram: VINCheckr · Diagram, not to scale

Kia captions this number “Frame number”, and its text in the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 Optima manuals reads: “The number is punched on the front side wall of the engine room.” Kia’s drawing (OJFA085013, the same in all four manuals) shows where: seen with the bonnet open, a “Turbo GDi” engine cover sits in the foreground and the arrow points at the panel behind the engine, below the base of the windscreen. That panel is the engine-bay bulkhead.

Open the bonnet and shine a torch along the bulkhead behind the engine. The manuals call the VIN the number used in registering the car and in all legal matters about its ownership.

Place 3, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid: the floor under the passenger seat

Diagram of a Kia Optima JF four-door saloon seen from the left, marker 3 highlighted and dashed because it is on the far side: on the Optima Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid the VIN punched into the floor under the front passenger seat; marker 2 is the bulkhead on petrol cars, marker 4 the driver’s-side centre-pillar label (door open)
Place 3, Optima Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid only (far side): the VIN punched into the floor under the passenger seat, the right-hand side of a left-hand-drive car. · Diagram: VINCheckr · Diagram, not to scale

The 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 Optima Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid manuals say: “The number is punched on the floor under the passenger seat.” Kia’s drawing (OJF085001) shows the seat and its runners, with an arrow lifting a long flap in the floor covering beside the runner. On a left-hand-drive car that is the right front seat. Slide it back, lift the mat and fold back the flap; never cut the carpet.

Place 4: the certification label, driver’s door open

Diagram of a Kia Optima JF four-door saloon seen from the left, marker 4 highlighted: the vehicle certification label low on the driver’s-side centre pillar, seen with the front door open; marker 3 dashed on the far side (floor under the passenger seat, hybrids)
Place 4, driver’s side (door open): the vehicle certification label low on the centre pillar, where the front door closes. · Diagram: VINCheckr · Diagram, not to scale

All eight manuals say: “The vehicle certification label attached on the driver’s side center pillar gives the vehicle identification number (VIN).” Kia’s drawing (OJF085003), seen through the open front door, shows it low on the pillar. The manuals put the tyre-pressure label on the same pillar, so read the one with 17 characters.

For a US-market car, 49 CFR 567.4 requires this label beside the driver’s seat, showing the month and year of manufacture and the VIN, fixed so that removing it destroys or defaces it. That is a US rule, and every manual describing the label is a US edition; a Gulf-market Optima JF may differ.

Before you enter the VIN, note how recalls are matched. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) records US recalls, and VINCheckr lists NHTSA’s US recalls by make, model and year. NHTSA files hybrid and plug-in recalls separately, under names such as OPTIMA HYBRID and OPTIMA PHEV. VINCheckr does not show Gulf campaigns or whether a recall was done on this car: for a US-market hybrid also run NHTSA’s VIN recall search, and on any car put the VIN to Al Tayer Motors.

0/17
In the Optima JF US manuals we read, the VIN is on a dashboard plate seen through the windscreen, on the driver’s-side centre-pillar label and punched on the bulkhead at the back of the engine bay (petrol) or in the floor under the passenger seat (hybrid).

KNA or 5XX: decoding an Optima JF number

The first three characters are the manufacturer identifier. NHTSA’s register lists KNA under “KIA CORPORATION” and 5XX under “KIA GEORGIA, INC”, both for passenger cars. The first character is a region code, not proof of where a car was built or sold: NHTSA says it “generally” identifies a geographic area, and its 2024 interpretation letter told Ford Motor Company it may use a US-assigned identifier on vehicles Ford builds abroad for US sale, a letter NHTSA says does not bind the public. Under the US VIN rule, character 10 gives the model year and character 11 the plant.

  • 5XXGM4A7, 5XXGN4A7, 5XXGR4A6 · F (2015)

    Character 11 (plant)
    G, Georgia
    Decoder reads
Optima, 2.4 direct injection or 2.0 turbo (the earlier TF)
  • KNAGM4AD, KNAGN4AD · F (2015) and G (2016)

  • 5XXG14J2, 5XXG24J2, 5XXG34J2, 5XXG64J2; 5XXG44J8 · M (2021)

    Character 11 (plant)
    G, Georgia
    Decoder reads
    K5, 1.6 turbo; 2.5 turbo

For these patterns only, the decoder gives three tests. A JF has 4L in characters 6 and 7, where the TF (2011–2015, and the 2016 Optima Hybrid) has 4A and the 2021 K5 a digit in character 5 and 4J. Character 8 reads 3, 1 or 2 on petrol cars (2.4, 1.6 turbo, 2.0 turbo), C or E on the hybrid and D on the plug-in, and every hybrid pattern starts KNAG. Character 11 reads G for Kia’s Georgia plant and 5 for Hwasung. With year letter G it labels the Georgia 2.4 patterns (5XXGT4L3, 5XXGU4L3) “T-GDI”, a turbo engine code, so the table gives only the size. Year letters repeat every 30 years; NHTSA’s free decoder reads a full VIN’s trim and engine.

The plant matters for the US recall 19V-539, a Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist software update that Kia’s report limits to 2019 Optimas with the 1.6 or 2.0 turbo built at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia from 21 May 2018 to 29 May 2019; every 2019 turbo pattern in the table has G in character 11.

No official source we found says how Kia codes Gulf-market Optima JF VINs, and NHTSA’s complaint records hold US cars only. A Gulf car that fits none of these rows is not suspect for that reason alone; ask Al Tayer Motors what Kia’s records show for the VIN and compare it with the first-registration papers.

Lining up the stamping, plate, label and card

On a petrol Optima JF the bulkhead stamping, the dashboard plate, the pillar label and the registration card should show one 17-character VIN; on a hybrid the floor stamping replaces the bulkhead. On a US-market label, a manufacture date far from the model year in character 10 needs explaining; a few months early is normal.

Ask about fresh paint, filler or sealer over the bulkhead stamping, a glued floor flap or cut carpet, a loose plate, or a label that looks reprinted, and keep the answers in writing.

An Optima JF whose VIN is unreadable or disagrees with the card

No official source we found sets out a UAE procedure for an Optima whose stamped number is corroded or tampered with, or whose VIN differs from the registration card. Hold back payment, show the car to the police or the licensing authority of the emirate where it is registered, and do as they direct; re-stamping or relabelling on a seller’s say-so only deepens the problem.

In Dubai, the seller can request the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Technical Vehicle Status Report, which shows details such as past ownership but, the RTA says, not accidents; check that its VIN matches the car.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I look for the VIN on a Kia Optima Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid?

In the floor under the passenger seat, according to Kia’s 2017–2020 Optima Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid manuals, under a flap in the floor covering in Kia’s drawing; the dashboard plate and the driver’s-side centre-pillar label repeat it. Slide the passenger seat back, lift the mat and fold back the flap.

Kia says “front side wall of the engine room”, so why look at the bulkhead?

Because Kia’s own drawing OJFA085013 puts the petrol Optima JF’s stamping on the bulkhead behind the engine, below the windscreen, not at the radiator end. Open the bonnet and search that panel with a torch.

Can the VIN show whether an Optima JF came from Georgia or from Hwasung?

Yes, as a decoder reading: on the Optima JF patterns in its complaint records, the decoder of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reads G in character 11 as Kia’s Georgia plant and 5 as Hwasung, South Korea. The first characters, KNA or 5XX, are not proof of the plant. On a 2019 turbo, read character 11 and ask about the US recall 19V-539 if it is G: on a US-market car through NHTSA’s VIN recall search, and on any car through Al Tayer Motors.

Which VIN character separates a petrol Optima JF from a hybrid?

Character 8, as the decoder of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reads the patterns in its complaint records: 3, 1 or 2 on petrol cars, C or E on the hybrid and D on the plug-in hybrid; the hybrid and plug-in patterns all begin KNAG. Confirm with the VIN in NHTSA’s decoder.

Will a Gulf-market Optima JF have the certification label on the pillar?

Not necessarily: the label is a US requirement, and every Kia manual we found that shows it is a US edition. On a Gulf car without one, rely on the dashboard plate and the punched number, and ask Al Tayer Motors where Kia marks that VIN.
