Buying a used Nissan Kicks P15 (2018–2024) in the UAE

Quick answer

The Nissan Kicks P15 is the first-generation Kicks, coded P15 in Nissan’s US owner’s manuals. In the US it covers the 2018–2024 model years, and Nissan kept selling it as the 2025 Kicks Play; in the Gulf, Nissan’s agents have sold it since March 2017, and the all-new Kicks arrived in February 2025. Every version has a 1.6-litre petrol engine, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive; Nissan’s Gulf releases quote 118 hp, its US releases 125 hp for 2018 and 122 hp from 2019. We found no Nissan CVT warranty extension for the Kicks. Before buying a Kicks P15, give the VIN to Nissan’s UAE agent and ask which campaigns are open; for a US import, also search the VIN with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the 2021 steering and 2023–2024 driver-airbag recalls.

Two routes into the UAE for the Nissan Kicks P15

The Kicks reached the Gulf more than a year before the US: Arabian Automobiles, Nissan’s dealer in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, dates the Gulf launch to March 2017, and Nissan’s 2018 US press kit put it in US showrooms in May 2018. In the US, the Kicks P15 is a 2018–2024 car: Nissan’s US manuals carry the code P15 from 2018, and the US press kits say “Assembled in Aguascaliente, Mexico”.

Nissan Mexicana said in January 2021 that its Aguascalientes A1 plant had built the Kicks since 2016 and had historically exported it to up to 62 countries, chiefly the US, Canada, Chile and the United Arab Emirates. That links UAE cars to Mexico but does not say every Gulf Kicks was built there. No official source we found states which plant built a given Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Kicks, or whether its specification matches the US car beyond the figures below; read the plate and ask Nissan’s UAE agent what the VIN shows.

Both markets moved on in 2025. In the US, Nissan launched an all-new 2025 Kicks with a 2.0-litre engine and kept the old car, as the 2025 Kicks Play in S grade only; the Kicks Play manual still carries the P15 code, the new Kicks manual P16. Nissan introduced the all-new Kicks in the Middle East at a Dubai event on 26 February 2025.

First checks on a used Kicks P15

  • Market: a Gulf car sold by Nissan’s UAE agents, or a US import with a US title and the US certification label on the driver’s centre pillar.
  • Year and engine: a 1.6-litre engine and a pre-2021 or post-2021 face that match the registration card.
  • Driving aids: no radar warning on the dashboard, and no sudden braking with nothing ahead on the test drive.
  • Idle: the engine keeps running as the car rolls to a stop at lights, with no warning lights.
  • The CVT: smooth pulling away, no shudder when accelerating again after braking, and fluid records.
  • Recalls: the 2021 power-steering column and the 2023–2024 driver airbag on a US car, and what Nissan’s UAE agent says is open on any car.

Common Nissan Kicks P15 problems by system

The figures below come from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), retrieved on 14 October 2026. NHTSA files the 2018–2024 car only as “KICKS”. Sorted by the partial VIN owners give, every complaint starts 3N1CP5, which NHTSA’s decoder reads as a 1.6-litre Kicks, apart from 10 with no VIN and 2 mistyped; all 489 are kept. 2025 is left out: NHTSA’s “KICKS PLAY” entry holds only complaints the decoder reads as the new “Kicks MPV”, and the two under 2025 “KICKS” with Kicks Play VINs are excluded too. A complaint is a US owner’s report, not a confirmed defect; a recall is a defect Nissan must fix free in the US.

Front radar warnings and unexpected braking

Forward collision avoidance is the largest complaint category: 132 complaints, 97 of them for 2018–2020 cars. Reading the matching owner reports, about 30 describe a front sensor or radar warning and about 20 describe the car braking suddenly or for no clear reason. NHTSA lists no recall in this category for the Kicks P15.

Nissan’s bulletin NTB19-033G (February 2025), covering 2018–2024 Kicks among many Nissans, deals with Intelligent Cruise Control stopping, the emergency braking warning light coming on or the message “Unavailable Front Radar Obstruction” while driving, when one of the four radar fault codes it lists is the only code stored. NTB24-050A (January 2025) covers “false activation and/or unexpected braking” of the emergency braking or forward collision warning on 2022–2023 Kicks built on or before 3 August 2024; dealers reprogram the driving-aids control unit if its part number is listed. Ask for records of either.

The engine stopping as the car slows (2020 cars)

Engine is a 100-complaint category, and 29 of those owner reports mention stalling, most of them for 2018–2019 cars. For 2020 cars Nissan named a possible cause: its voluntary service campaign P0A09 of 28 May 2020 covered 30,351 US model-year 2020 Kicks whose engine computer calibration “could, under certain conditions, cause the engine to stall when coming to a stop”, and bulletin NTB20-040 has dealers inspect and, if needed, reprogram the engine computer free of charge. Ask Nissan’s UAE agent whether P0A09 shows as complete for the VIN.

The CVT: two bulletins and no extension

Power train holds 68 complaints, 40 of which mention the CVT or the transmission. Nissan’s bulletin NTB20-060B (May 2022) adds diagnostic logic for 2018–2019 Kicks whose owners report “a transmission judder (shake, shudder, single or multiple bumps or vibration), hesitation on acceleration, lack of power, or RPM flare”. Its NTB23-048 (June 2023, revised April 2026) covers 2018–2021 Kicks and 2022 cars built on or before 18 February 2022, with the RE0F11B CVT and a stored judder code, where vibration “occurs during quick reacceleration after braking”: the dealer reads a shift counter and replaces either the fluid or the CVT.

Nissan has extended CVT cover to 84 months or 84,000 miles on several US models, including the Altima, Sentra and Rogue, but we found no Kicks extension or settlement in NHTSA’s files of Nissan’s communications to dealers from 2015 to 2026. Nissan North America’s 2022 warranty booklet gives powertrain cover of 60 months or 60,000 miles and says the warranty stops applying once a car is relocated outside the US, its territories and Canada. No official source we found gives the UAE agents’ position on an imported Kicks, so ask with the VIN before relying on any cover.

Nissan’s 2018 and 2024 manuals describe a high fluid temperature protection mode that cuts engine power and may reduce speed, and recommend Genuine NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-3 “(or equivalent)”. A Kicks that loses power in ordinary driving, not just on a long, hot, loaded climb, needs a dealer check.

Steering, airbag and camera recalls, and rear glass

Recalls 22V-693 and 23V-496 cover 2021 Versas and Kicks whose electric power steering torque sensor may lose its connection, switching the assistance off. Recall 24V-154 replaces the driver’s airbag on some 2023–2024 Kicks because its inflator may absorb moisture and deploy improperly. Recall 19V-654 updates reversing-camera software on 2018–2019 cars whose settings can hide the rear image.

Of 37 complaints for 2024 cars, 19 describe the rear glass shattering or cracking without impact. Of 24 structure complaints for 2021 cars, 22 are near-identical fleet reports of paint chipping above the windscreen.

Nissan Kicks P15 problems by model year

How the severity is set: a recall is matched to the complaint category NHTSA files its component under. High means NHTSA lists a recall in that category for that model year, and the row gives that category’s complaint count. Medium means no recall, but a named category (not “unknown or other”) has at least 20 complaints for that year. Low means neither. One complaint can sit in several categories.

All four recalls name “certain” cars of their years, not all of them; whether one applies depends on the VIN.

Telling a Gulf Kicks from a US import

NHTSA’s register gives 3N1 to Nissan Mexicana, and its decoder reads 3N1CP5 VINs as Kicks built in Aguascalientes; in a 2024 interpretation letter NHTSA said a manufacturer code need not show where a car was built. The more useful sign is paperwork: a US-market Kicks carries the Federal/Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (F.M.V.S.S./C.M.V.S.S.) certification label on the centre pillar between the driver’s doors. A Gulf car’s service and campaign history sits with Nissan’s agents, such as Al Masaood in Abu Dhabi and Arabian Automobiles in Dubai.

Gulf recalls do not always mirror US ones. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Commerce recalled 2,091 model-year 2020 Nissan Sunny and Kicks cars in November 2022 for a steering column fault that can make the steering heavier than expected, Al Muraba reported; NHTSA lists no steering recall for 2020 Kicks. We found no UAE recall notice naming the Kicks P15, which does not mean none exists.

For a US import, NHTSA posts recall letters to the registered US owner, and it says its VIN search does not show recalls on an international vehicle; search the VIN there anyway and then ask Nissan’s UAE agent about 22V-693, 23V-496 and 24V-154. VINCheckr’s recall section lists NHTSA’s US recalls for the Kicks and its model year, not Gulf campaigns or whether a recall is still open on that VIN; on a Gulf car, take that list to Nissan’s UAE agent as questions. US title brands such as salvage or flood show in a National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) report, sold by the approved providers listed on vehiclehistory.gov for up to about $4, the US Department of Justice says; a search can miss records.

Imported used cars in the UAE

How to check a Nissan Kicks P15’s accident history

The Ministry of Interior (MOI) and Abu Dhabi Police both list a public accident inquiry by chassis number among their e-services. VINCheckr searches the UAE accident records available to it, from MOI and, during periods when MOI cannot be reached, Abu Dhabi Police; a clean result means no accident was found in those records, not that the Kicks was never repaired.

For a US import, VINCheckr searches bid.cars, plc.auction and carsbidshistory.com and links to any listing it finds, with photos where the listing has them. A listing shows the car was offered at a US auction at least once; its title and damage fields show whether it was sold as salvage. NHTSA lists mud, a waterline and unusual rust as flood signs.

How to read a US auction listing

How to check the mileage

A US Kicks reads in miles. US auction listings and the NMVTIS report carry odometer readings. We found no public UAE odometer history, so put the dated readings in order before trusting the odometer.

VINCheckr adds European mileage readings where available, from registers and sales listings; few Gulf or US cars have any, so “no readings found” means no data, not a confirmed odometer.

On a Nissan Kicks P15 the VIN is on the driver’s-side dashboard plate at the foot of the windscreen, on the bulkhead behind the engine under the bonnet and, on US-market cars, on the label low on the driver’s centre pillar.

Where to find the VIN on a Nissan Kicks P15

Nissan’s US manuals for every year from 2018 to 2024 draw the Nissan Kicks P15 VIN on a dashboard plate at the foot of the windscreen on the driver’s side and, as the chassis number, on the bulkhead behind the engine; a US-market car repeats it on a label low on the driver’s centre pillar. A Gulf-market car may differ, and every number must match the registration card.

Where to find the VIN on a Nissan Kicks P15

Nissan Kicks P15 inspection checklist

  1. Find the VIN in all three places (dashboard plate, bulkhead under the bonnet and, on a US car, the pillar label) and check each against the registration card.
  2. Confirm a 1.6-litre engine and a face that fits the model year on the registration card (Double V-motion grille from 2021).
  3. Give the VIN to Nissan’s UAE agent and ask which campaigns are open, including P0A09 on a 2020 car; on a US import, search it with NHTSA too.
  4. On a US import, read the title brand and any auction listing, then lift the boot floor and carpet edges looking for silt or rust.
  5. With the engine warm, let the car roll to a stop at a junction several times and watch for stalling or warning lights.
  6. On an open road with nothing close ahead, watch for radar warnings or braking the driver did not ask for.
  7. Accelerate again just after braking: the CVT should not shudder.
  8. Check that the power steering warning light goes out after starting and that parking feels light; avoid repeated full turns, which the manual says reduce assistance to protect the system.
  9. Inspect the rear glass for cracks and the paint above the windscreen, then pay for an independent inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 2025 Nissan Kicks a P15 or the new generation?

It can be either. In the US, Nissan sold the old car as the 2025 Kicks Play, whose manual carries the P15 code and the 1.6-litre engine, beside an all-new 2025 Kicks with a 2.0-litre engine and the P16 code. In the Gulf, Nissan introduced the all-new Kicks on 26 February 2025. Open the bonnet or read the registration card: a 1.6-litre engine means this guide applies.

Does a Gulf Kicks have the same engine as a US-import Kicks P15?

The same size at least: both have a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive. Nissan’s US manuals name it HR16DE, and its US press kits rate it at 125 hp for 2018 and 122 hp from 2019; Nissan’s Middle East releases quote 118 hp and give no engine code. No source we found explains the difference, so ask Nissan’s UAE agent what a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) car’s VIN shows.

Is there a Nissan CVT settlement or extended cover for the Kicks P15?

None that we found. Nissan has given several US models, including the Altima, Sentra and Rogue, 84-month continuously variable transmission (CVT) extensions, but the dealer communications Nissan filed with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from 2015 to 2026 show no Kicks extension. The usual US powertrain cover, 60 months or 60,000 miles, stops once a car is relocated outside the US, its territories and Canada. Ask Nissan’s UAE agent what it covers before buying.

What does “Unavailable Front Radar Obstruction” mean on a Nissan Kicks P15?

It means the car has detected something blocking the front radar and has temporarily switched off forward driving aids such as Intelligent Cruise Control and emergency braking. Nissan’s 2024 manual says a similar “Front Sensor Blocked” message appears when mud, dirt, snow, ice or bad weather covers the sensor. If the message keeps returning on a test drive, ask for a dealer diagnosis before buying.

Why did Nissan reprogram the engine computer on 2020 Kicks?

Because a calibration change could make the engine stall as the car came to a stop. Nissan’s voluntary service campaign P0A09, announced on 28 May 2020, covered 30,351 model-year 2020 Kicks in the US and has dealers reprogram the engine computer free. Ask Nissan’s UAE agent, with the VIN, whether P0A09 is recorded as done, and let the engine idle at a few stops on your test drive.

How these figures are calculated (2026-03-13 to 2026-10-15)
  • Aggregated, anonymised VINCheckr checks. Repeat checks of one VIN count once (latest check); reused reports are excluded.
  • Model figures count only checks whose make, model and model year map to that generation, leaving out VIN prefixes that mark another model or generation; the all-vehicle figures count every check with a decoded make.
  • A VIN starting with 1–5 carries a North American manufacturer code. Such cars are usually, but not always, built in North America (NHTSA interpretation letter NCC-240821-001, 2024), and the code does not show where the car was first sold or registered.
  • Auction share: checks with at least one listing on bid.cars, plc.auction or carsbidshistory.com. Listings on bid.cars and plc.auction were not searched from 15 May to 7 October 2026, so the true share is likely higher.
  • Accident share: checks with at least one UAE police accident record (Ministry of Interior or Abu Dhabi Police); checks where the MOI lookup timed out or did not complete are excluded. A minimum, not an exact rate.
  • Figures are shown only for groups of at least 100 unique VINs.
