Buying a used Ford Mustang S550 (2015–2023) in the UAE
Quick answer
The Ford Mustang S550 is the 2015–2023 Mustang, with a 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder, a 3.7-litre V6 (2015–2017) or a 5.0-litre V8, and a six-speed manual, a six-speed automatic (2015–2017) or a 10-speed automatic (2018 on). Ford sold it new in the Gulf, and a used one may also be a US import, so check US title brands and auction listings first: Ford’s US warranty guide (2018 model-year edition) says a salvage, rebuilt or flood brand, or an insurer’s total-loss decision, voids its New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Check recalls by VIN with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a US-market car, or with Al Tayer Motors, Ford’s UAE dealer, for a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market car. Then test the airbag light, reversing camera, doors and air conditioning.

The Ford Mustang S550 in the UAE
Ford’s release of 5 December 2013 set out the engines of the all-new Mustang, sold as the 2015 model; its January 2015 release says the car would be exported to more than 100 markets, and on 17 May 2015 Ford Middle East announced it at dealers across the region. Ford revealed a restyled Mustang with a new 10-speed automatic on 17 January 2017, and the all-new seventh generation on 14 September 2022, on sale in the US from summer 2023. SlashGear reports that S550 is the platform code of the 2015–2023 car.
Al Tayer Motors describes itself as the official Ford dealer in the UAE, represented in Abu Dhabi through Premier Motors. A used S550 may be a Gulf car or a US import; this guide starts with the check that matters most on an import: whether it was written off in the US and rebuilt for sale.
What to check first on a used Mustang S550
- The US past: title brands, auction listings with damage photos, and any insurer total-loss decision.
- Signs of crash repair: the airbag readiness light, every seat belt, the driver’s-door label on a US-market car and the VIN plate.
- Recalls by VIN (the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA, for a US-market car, Al Tayer Motors for a Gulf car), including the reversing camera (22V-082) and front seat belt pretensioners (25V-614) on 2015–2017 cars.
- The air conditioning on a hot day, especially on 2015–2017 cars.
- Doors that stay latched over bumps, and a camera image every time reverse is selected.
- On a 2.3-litre EcoBoost: coolant level, white exhaust smoke and stored misfire codes.
How to spot a rebuilt Mustang S550
Ford’s US warranty guide for 2018 model-year cars says its New Vehicle Limited Warranty does not cover, and is voided for, a vehicle ever “labeled or branded as dismantled, fire, flood, junk, rebuilt, reconstructed, or salvaged”, or found to be a total loss by an insurance company. Title brands show in a National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) report, sold by the approved providers listed on vehiclehistory.gov for up to about $4, the US Department of Justice says; a search can miss records. A US auction listing’s photos show where the car was hit; match them with the panels in front of you.
On the car, Ford’s 2015 manual gives three clues. The airbag readiness light should come on with the ignition and go out; if it stays lit, flashes or five beeps sound, the system needs a dealer. A deployed airbag “will not function again and must be replaced”. Ford also recommends replacing every seat belt worn in a crash unless the crash was minor and a dealer finds it undamaged, so pull each belt out fully and let it retract. A missing door label on a US-market car, or a VIN that differs from the registration card, needs an explanation.
NHTSA lists mud, waterlines and unusual rust as flood signs; have the carpet lifted and the underlay checked for damp and silt.

Common Ford Mustang S550 problems by system
These counts come from NHTSA, retrieved on 14 October 2026. Counting each complaint once, under every model name NHTSA uses for the S550, such as “MUSTANG GT350R” and “MUSTANG COUPE”, gives 1,665. By the partial VIN owners give, six that NHTSA’s decoder reads as another car (four earlier Mustangs, a Mustang Mach-E and a Nissan) are left out, keeping 1,659, 40 of them without a VIN. A complaint is a US owner’s report, not a confirmed defect.
Reversing camera and doors
NHTSA’s back-over prevention category, the reversing camera, holds 192 complaints, 157 for 2015–2017 cars. Recall 22V-082 repairs the bootlid wiring or camera on 2015–2017 cars whose image can go blank and 25V-572 replaces cameras on 2015–2019 cars.
In about 90 owner reports, mostly for 2015–2018 cars, owners describe a door opening or unlatching while driving. Recalls 16V-643 and 20V-331 replace door latches on 2015 cars and 17V-168 repairs the driver’s interior handle spring on 2017 cars; other years have no door recall. Drive over speed bumps and watch for a door-ajar warning.
Engines, cooling and the heat
On 2.3-litre EcoBoost cars, identified by the engine character in the VIN, about 90 complaints for 2015–2020 describe coolant getting into the cylinders or a failed head gasket, some ending in a new engine (owner reports). NHTSA lists no recall, and we found no Ford bulletin on it in NHTSA’s files. Check the coolant level from cold and ask a mechanic to read stored misfire codes.
For the Gulf, Ford’s 2015 and 2023 US manuals give a hot-climate oil change interval of 3,000 miles (4,800 km) for cars in the Middle East, and the 2015 manual says a dealer may need to cut the coolant concentration to 40% in extremely hot climates.
Air conditioning evaporator (2015–2017)
Ford’s bulletin 18-2166 of 7 June 2018 says some 2015–2017 Mustangs may cool poorly because the evaporator leaks refrigerant, and lets dealers replace it alone rather than the whole climate-control housing, in about five hours’ labour. A related Ford message, 47149, names cars built on or before 2 September 2016. Of 51 complaints mentioning the evaporator, 43 are for 2015–2016 cars (owner reports). Ask whether the evaporator has been replaced.
Gearboxes
Recall 18V-213 checks 2018 10-speed cars for a missing roll pin that can lose the Park function, and 23V-070 inspects 2022–2023 automatics for a loose bolt with the same effect. About 25 complaints for 2018–2022 cars mention the 10-speed, often harsh or clunking shifts (owner reports). Check that the car holds in Park and shifts smoothly from cold.
Brakes, seat belts, airbags and steering
Recall 22V-011 replaces the pedal bumpers of 2015 Mustangs sold or registered in ten US states, among them Texas, Virginia and Hawaii, because heat, humidity and salt air can corrode them; 28 complaints describe a crumbled bumper leaving the brake lights on or cutting power (owner reports). A US import ever registered in one of them is covered; Gulf cars are outside it, so check the bumper on any 2015 car. Recall 20V-573 replaces a brake pedal bracket that may fracture on 2020 automatics, and 23V-727 and 25V-689 fix the low brake fluid warning on 2020–2023 cars.
Recall 25V-614 covers 332,778 US 2015–2017 Mustangs: Ford’s report links corroded front seat belt pretensioner cables to carpet underlay soaked by salty water, citing winter road salt, and NHTSA had it widened to all US cars; Ford expected the final repair from December 2026. Recalls 24V-493 and 25V-096 update the power steering software of 2022–2023 cars whose wheel can turn side to side against the driver.
Ford Mustang S550 problems by model year
How severity is rated: each recall counts against the complaint category NHTSA files its component under. High means an NHTSA recall in that category lists that model year; the row gives the category’s complaint count. Medium means no recall in the category, but a named category (not “unknown or other”) holds 20 or more complaints for that year. NHTSA keeps some similar categories apart, such as “service brakes” and “service brakes, hydraulic”, and the table follows its split. Counts are US owner reports and grow with age.

Does Ford’s US warranty follow the car?
Ford’s US warranty guide for 2018 model-year cars gives three years or 36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper cover, and five years or 60,000 miles (about 97,000 km) for the powertrain and for seat belts and airbags, from first delivery. It applies only to a car first sold or leased by Ford or its dealers in the US or its territories and first registered and operated in the US, its territories or Canada, including while the owner travels abroad, when a foreign dealer may charge and a US dealer can consider a refund. It says nothing about exported cars. Five years have passed for any car delivered before October 2021, and a branded or written-off car has no cover. No official source we found says how Ford’s UAE dealers treat that cover on an imported car, so ask Al Tayer Motors with the VIN.
Gulf-market vs US-import Mustang S550
Ford’s 2015 export release says exported Mustangs pass through a homologation centre that prepares them for the destination country’s rules, some with an underbody coating and documents in its language. NHTSA says a manufacturer code need not show where a car was built, and it says nothing about where a car was first sold. No official source we found lists how Gulf-market S550s differ from US ones; ask Al Tayer Motors what the VIN shows, and compare it with the import papers.
For a US import, NHTSA says recall letters go by post to the registered US owner and its VIN search does not show recalls on an international vehicle, so ask Al Tayer Motors too. VINCheckr’s recall section lists NHTSA’s US recalls for the Mustang and its model year, not Gulf campaigns or whether a recall is still open on that VIN; on a Gulf car, take that list to Al Tayer Motors as questions. The Qatar Tribune reported a December 2020 Qatari recall of 2020 Mustangs for a weak brake pedal bracket; we found no UAE notice naming a 2015–2023 Mustang.
How to check a Ford Mustang S550’s accident history
For the car’s years in the UAE, the Ministry of Interior (MOI) and Abu Dhabi Police both list a public accident inquiry by chassis number among their e-services. VINCheckr searches the UAE accident records available to it, from MOI and, during periods when MOI cannot be reached, Abu Dhabi Police; a clean result means no accident was found in those records, not that the car was never damaged.
For damage in the US before export, VINCheckr searches bid.cars, plc.auction and carsbidshistory.com and links to any listing it finds, with photos where the listing has them. A listing shows the Mustang was offered at a US auction at least once; its title and damage fields show whether it was sold as salvage.
How to check the mileage
No public UAE source we found gives one odometer history, so collect dated readings: service invoices, any US auction listing and the title and odometer data in the NMVTIS report. A US car reads in miles.
VINCheckr adds European mileage readings where available, from registers and sales listings; few US or UAE cars have any, so “no readings found” means no data, not a confirmed odometer.

Where to find the VIN on a Ford Mustang S550
Ford’s US manuals put the Ford Mustang S550 VIN on a plate on the left of the dashboard, read from outside through the base of the windscreen on the driver’s side, and, on a US-market car, on the certification label at the driver’s door; a Gulf-market car may differ. Both must match the registration card.
Ford Mustang S550 inspection checklist
- Match the dashboard VIN plate, the driver’s-door label on a US-market car, and the registration card.
- Check US title brands and auction listings, with photos.
- Check recalls by VIN (NHTSA for a US-market car, Al Tayer Motors for a Gulf car) and ask for camera, seat belt and latch repair records.
- Switch on the ignition, watch the airbag readiness light come on and go out, then pull out every seat belt and let it retract.
- Have the carpet lifted near the front seat belt anchors and look for damp or corrosion; then put the car on a lift and look for repairs, flood signs and, on a 2015 car, a cracked pedal bumper.
- From cold, check the coolant level and watch the exhaust for white smoke, especially on a 2.3-litre EcoBoost.
- Drive for 30 minutes in normal mode with the air conditioning on maximum, using reverse and speed bumps; leave Track Apps, launch control and line lock off, as Ford’s manuals restrict them to tracks.
- Ask for oil records, then have an independent mechanic inspect the car.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 2015 or a 2023 Mustang an S550?
Both are: the S550 covers the 2015 to 2023 model years. Ford sold the all-new Mustang as the 2015 model, restyled it for 2018 and replaced it with the seventh generation from summer 2023. Check the model year on the registration card.
Can a rebuilt US Mustang still get Ford warranty repairs?
No: Ford’s warranty guide for 2018 model-year cars says a car ever branded salvage, rebuilt or flood, or declared a total loss by an insurer, loses its New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Even unbranded, US powertrain cover lasts five years or 60,000 miles (about 97,000 km) from first delivery. Ask Al Tayer Motors, with the VIN, whether any cover remains.
How can I tell whether a Mustang S550 was written off in the US?
Check the records first: brands show in a National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) report, sold by the approved providers listed on vehiclehistory.gov for up to about $4, the US Department of Justice says (a search can miss records), and an auction listing shows whether the car sold as salvage. On the car, an airbag light that stays on, belts that do not retract and, on a US-market car, a missing door label need explaining; have a body shop look for repairs.
Which camera, seat belt and steering recalls cover the Ford Mustang S550?
Start with the reversing camera (22V-082 on 2015–2017 cars, 25V-572 on 2015–2019), the front seat belt pretensioners (25V-614, 2015–2017), the 2017 passenger airbag (17V-529) and the 2022–2023 steering software (24V-493, 25V-096). Search the VIN with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a US-market car, or ask Al Tayer Motors for a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market car.
Is the air conditioning a weak point on the 2015–2017 Mustang?
Yes, on some cars: Ford’s June 2018 bulletin 18-2166 covers poor cooling from a leaking evaporator on 2015–2017 Mustangs and lets dealers replace the evaporator alone. Run the air conditioning on maximum for the whole test drive and ask whether the evaporator has been replaced.
VINCheckr data
VINCheckr’s figures below count manufacturer codes; they do not show how many cars were imported from the US.
- VINs checked on VINCheckr
- 339
- VIN starts with 1–5 (North American manufacturer code)
- 100%
- US auction history found
- at least 20%
- UAE accident records found
- at least 23%
How these figures are calculated (2026-03-13 to 2026-10-15)
- Aggregated, anonymised VINCheckr checks. Repeat checks of one VIN count once (latest check); reused reports are excluded.
- Model figures count only checks whose make, model and model year map to that generation, leaving out VIN prefixes that mark another model or generation; the all-vehicle figures count every check with a decoded make.
- A VIN starting with 1–5 carries a North American manufacturer code. Such cars are usually, but not always, built in North America (NHTSA interpretation letter NCC-240821-001, 2024), and the code does not show where the car was first sold or registered.
- Auction share: checks with at least one listing on bid.cars, plc.auction or carsbidshistory.com. Listings on bid.cars and plc.auction were not searched from 15 May to 7 October 2026, so the true share is likely higher.
- Accident share: checks with at least one UAE police accident record (Ministry of Interior or Abu Dhabi Police); checks where the MOI lookup timed out or did not complete are excluded. A minimum, not an exact rate.
- Figures are shown only for groups of at least 100 unique VINs.
