Where to find the VIN on a Ford Mustang S550
Quick answer
Ford’s US owner’s manuals for the 2015, 2018 and 2023 Ford Mustang S550 give two places for the VIN. The first is a plate on the left-hand side of the instrument panel: Ford’s drawing puts it at the base of the windscreen on the driver’s side, and on a car built to US rules it must be readable from outside beside the left windscreen pillar. The second, on a US-market car, is the Safety Compliance Certification Label, which Ford says is fixed to the door hinge pillar, the door latch post or the edge of the door near the latch, next to the driver’s seat. No Ford manual for Gulf-market Mustangs was found, so a car sold new in the UAE may be labelled differently. Read the windscreen plate first: a Mustang S550 whose plate and registration card disagree cannot be matched to its papers.
Location 1: the VIN plate behind the windscreen, driver’s side
Ford’s US owner’s manuals for the 2015, 2018 and 2023 Ford Mustang S550 use the same sentence: “The vehicle identification number is located on the left-hand side of the instrument panel.” All three print the same drawing, numbered E142476. Seen from above, it points to a small plate at the base of the windscreen on the car’s left, where the glass meets the windscreen pillar. On a left-hand-drive UAE Mustang, look down through the lower corner of the windscreen by the driver’s door. The manuals cover the coupe and the convertible and give no separate place for either, and the drawing number is the same in the 2015, 2018 and 2023 manuals.
For a car built to US rules, this position is also the law: Part 565 of title 49 of the US Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR Part 565) says a passenger car’s VIN must sit inside the passenger compartment and be readable through the glazing, without moving any part of the car, by someone standing outside next to the left windscreen pillar.
Location 2: the certification label at the driver’s door (US-market cars)
On a Ford Mustang S550, open the driver’s door to find the Safety Compliance Certification Label. Ford’s 2015 and 2018 manuals say the regulations of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) require it, and that it “shall be affixed to either the door hinge pillar, the door latch post, or the edge of the door near the door latch, next to the driver’s seating position”. Ford draws the label but not its place on the car, so check all three: the front edge of the door opening, the rear post the door shuts against, and the rear edge of the door itself. Ford’s drawing of the label, E167469, shows a date field and a line for the VIN. The 2023 manual drops that page but names the same three places in its loading section, next to two example labels.
This label belongs to the US certification system. The US rule, 49 CFR 567.4, requires the month and year of manufacture and the VIN on it, and says it must be riveted or fixed so that it cannot be removed without destroying or defacing it. Ford’s manuals also mention a separate Tire Label on the B-pillar or the edge of the driver’s door, which is for tyre pressures; Ford’s 2015 manual adds that cars exported outside the US and Canada may not have one.
No official source we found describes the labels on a Ford Mustang S550 sold new in the Gulf. The manuals quoted here are US and Canada editions, and Ford’s January 2015 export release says Mustangs shipped from the US go through steps to meet the vehicle standards of the destination country. A Gulf car may therefore carry a different label at the driver’s door, or none. Before treating a missing or unfamiliar label as a fault, ask Al Tayer Motors, which describes itself as Ford’s official dealer in the UAE (through Premier Motors in Abu Dhabi), which labels that VIN should carry.

Reading a Mustang S550 VIN: 1FA, the body code and the year letter
Ford’s manuals split the 17 characters of a Ford Mustang S550 VIN into eight groups: the world manufacturer identifier (characters 1–3); the brake system, gross vehicle weight rating and restraint devices (4); make, vehicle line, series and body type (5–7); engine type (8); a check digit (9); model year (10); assembly plant (11); and a production sequence number (12–17). The register of NHTSA, read through its Product Information Catalog and Vehicle Listing (vPIC) service, records 1FA as Ford Motor Company’s manufacturer identifier for passenger cars. The partial VINs in NHTSA’s 2015–2023 Mustang complaint records begin 1FA6P8 or 1FATP8, with few exceptions.
The first character is a region code, not proof of where the car was built or sold. NHTSA says it generally identifies a geographic area, and its 2024 interpretation letter answered a question from Ford itself: Ford may use one of its US-assigned manufacturer identifiers on vehicles it builds outside the United States for import into and sale in the United States, provided Ford certifies them. For the plant, read character 11. NHTSA’s decoder, which shows the plant as reported by the manufacturer, reads 5 there on these patterns as Flat Rock, Michigan, where Ford said in 2015 the Mustang for more than 100 markets is assembled.
1FA6P8 · F (2015) to P (2023)
- Decoder reads
- Mustang coupe, Flat Rock
- What it means here
- Ford Mustang S550 coupe
1FATP8 · F (2015) to P (2023)
- Decoder reads
- Mustang convertible, Flat Rock
- What it means here
- Ford Mustang S550 convertible
1FA6P8 · R (2024) or S (2025)
- Decoder reads
- Mustang coupe, 2024 on
- What it means here
- Seventh-generation Mustang
1FAGP8 · R (2024)
- Decoder reads
- Mustang convertible, 2024
- What it means here
- Seventh-generation Mustang
1ZV · E (2014) or earlier
- Decoder reads
- Mustang, Auto Alliance International
- What it means here
- A 2014 or earlier Mustang
3FMTK · M (2021)
- Decoder reads
- Mustang Mach-E, Ford Motor Company, Mexico
- What it means here
- A different vehicle
These are decoder readings, not a Ford rule. The decoder returns no model for a 1FA6P8 pattern with the 2014 letter E or a 1ZV pattern with the 2015 letter F, so on these patterns the year letter separates the generations: F to P is an S550, R or later is the seventh-generation Mustang that Ford revealed on 14 September 2022. In NHTSA’s 2024 complaint records the partial VINs begin 1FA6P8 or 1FAGP8, with R, which the decoder reads as coupe and convertible. The Mustang Mach-E is an electric car that NHTSA files under its own name, with the 3FM identifier of Ford Motor Company, Mexico. Character 8 is the engine: the decoder reads H and D as the 2.3-litre, M as the 3.7, F and 0 as the 5.0, and Z and J as the 5.2.
No official source we found sets out the VIN of a Gulf-market Ford Mustang S550. Do not reject a Gulf car because a US-style decode looks odd; ask Al Tayer Motors what the VIN shows in Ford’s records and compare it with the first-registration papers.
Plate, label and papers: one Mustang S550 VIN
The windscreen plate, the door label of a US-market car, the registration card and any US title or auction listing must all show the same 17 characters. Ford’s 2018 manual already applies to cars built from 7 August 2017, so a label dated months before the model year is normal; years before is not.
On a Ford Mustang S550, stop and ask questions if the plate sits loose or crooked under the glass, the dashboard top shows pry marks at the base of the windscreen, the door label is missing on a car sold as US-market, the label is painted over, peeling or looks reprinted, or any two numbers differ by a single character. Get the explanation in writing and pay nothing until an inspector and the authorities have seen the car.
A Mustang S550 VIN that is unreadable, altered or does not match
No official UAE source we found explains what a buyer should do when a VIN is unreadable, looks altered or differs from the registration card. Before paying for the Ford Mustang S550, ask the police or the traffic authority of the emirate where it is registered. In Dubai that is the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), which describes a mandatory technical inspection of roadworthiness at approved centres, with a re-test after a fail and a way to appeal the result. Do not arrange a new plate, a reprinted label or a re-stamped number yourself.
A Mustang S550 brought from the US has more papers to compare: the US title, the import documents and any US auction listing. Ford’s US manuals ask an owner who buys in North America and moves to the Middle East to register the VIN and new address with Ford by email (Ford Global Trade Services, in the 2023 manual), so ask the seller whether that was done.
Frequently asked questions
Can I read a Ford Mustang S550 VIN without opening the car?
Yes. The Ford Mustang S550 VIN plate is on the left-hand side of the instrument panel, and Ford’s drawing places it at the base of the windscreen on the driver’s side, so you read it from outside through the glass. Do it before the test drive and write the number down to compare with the registration card.
Is the VIN in the same place on a Mustang S550 convertible?
Ford’s US owner’s manuals give the same place: they cover both the coupe and the convertible and print one VIN drawing for the Ford Mustang S550 in 2015, 2018 and 2023. On a US-market convertible the certification label is also at the driver’s door. Read the plate through the windscreen whether the roof is up or down.
How do I tell a Mustang S550 from a 2024-on Mustang by the VIN?
Look at character 10. The decoder of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reads 1FA6P8 and 1FATP8 Mustang patterns with F to P there as 2015–2023 cars, the Ford Mustang S550 years, and 1FA6P8 patterns with R or later as 2024-on cars. Coupes of both start 1FA6P8; 2024 convertibles start 1FAGP8 rather than 1FATP8. Confirm the model year on the US title or the registration card.
Could a listing for a “Mustang” be a Mustang Mach-E?
Yes, so check the VIN before anything else. The decoder of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reads 3FMTK patterns as the Mustang Mach-E, an electric car from Ford Motor Company, Mexico, while Ford Mustang S550 patterns start 1FA. Ask the seller for the VIN and read the first three characters before arranging a viewing.
Does 1FA at the start of a Mustang S550 VIN prove the car was built in the US?
It identifies Ford Motor Company, not the country of build. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) registers 1FA to Ford for passenger cars, and in a 2024 letter to Ford it said Ford may use a US-assigned identifier on cars it builds abroad for sale in the United States, provided Ford certifies them. On Ford Mustang S550 patterns, NHTSA’s decoder reads character 11 as Flat Rock, Michigan. Check the import papers as well.
