Buying a used Honda Civic 10th generation (2016–2021) in the UAE
Quick answer
The Honda Civic 10th generation covers the 2016 to 2021 model years. Al-Futtaim’s Honda website in the UAE listed a 2.0, a 1.5 turbo and, from 2017, a 1.6, each with a continuously variable transmission. Coupes, hatchbacks, the Si, manual gearboxes and the 2017–2021 Type R appear on none of the archived pages we found, so treat them as likely imports and check the VIN history. On a 1.5 turbo, ask whether Honda’s oil-dilution software update was done; American Honda ran it in 21 cold-weather US states. Across 2016–2021, check the fuel-pump recalls 20V-314, 21V-215 and 23V-858 and the passenger seat-sensor recalls 24V-064 and 26V-332. Honda’s US air-conditioning warranty extensions exclude salvage and branded-title cars. From the 2022 model year the Civic is an all-new 11th-generation car with its own records.

What Honda’s UAE distributor sold from 2016 to 2021
Honda’s Middle East website names Trading Enterprises, part of Al-Futtaim Automotive, as “the sole authorized distributor of Honda in the UAE”. Its honda.ae site presented “the all-new 10th-generation Civic” as the 2016 Civic in June 2016, still described the 10th generation in August 2021, and showed the “All-new Civic 2022” by May 2022.
Engine, body, gearbox, title and build date: sorting a Civic quickly
- Engine: a 1.6 is a Gulf or general-market car; Al-Futtaim also listed the 2.0 and 1.5 turbo.
- Body and badge: we found no coupe, hatchback, Si or Type R on Al-Futtaim’s Civic pages, and Honda’s Middle East brochure describes a saloon; all appear in US records.
- Gearbox: every Gulf engine came with a continuously variable transmission (CVT); a manual points elsewhere.
- Title: a US salvage or branded title voids Honda’s US air-conditioning extensions.
- Build date: several recalls cover a narrow build window; a US car’s door-pillar label shows it.
Ninth, tenth or eleventh generation: the year and the first VIN characters
In the complaint records of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 2016–2021 Civics carry VINs beginning 19XFC, 2HGFC or JHMFC for saloons and coupes, SHHFK7 for hatchbacks and SHHFK8 for the Type R, which NHTSA’s decoder reads as “Civic Type R”. Older Civics in the same records begin 19XFB, 2HGFB or 2HGFG, and 2022 Civics begin 2HGFE, 19XFL or JHMFE. The tenth character gives the model year under the US VIN rule, G (2016) to M (2021); Gulf VINs may differ, so trust the registration card first.
1.6, 2.0 or 1.5 turbo: what the engine says about where a Civic was sold
Al-Futtaim’s 2016 page offers a 158 hp 2.0 or a 180 hp 1.5 turbo, both with a CVT; by July 2017 it added “the recently added 1.6L” with 123 hp. Honda’s Middle East brochure for the 2019/20 Civic, a Saudi edition, lists the 1.6 port-injection engine on 91-octane fuel for the DX, LX and LX Sport, and the 1.5 turbo on 95-octane for the RS, all with a CVT and front-wheel drive.
American Honda’s 2018 owner’s manuals cover 1.5 and 2.0 engines with a CVT or a manual gearbox, and its 2023 air-conditioning bulletin lists the 1.5 turbo, the 2.0 and the Type R’s 2.0 turbo. No 1.6 appears in US records. NHTSA’s decoder reads the Si as a 1.5 turbo saloon or coupe.
In September 2018 Al-Futtaim’s warranty page gave new cars five years with unlimited kilometres, “only valid in the UAE, on retail cars purchased in the UAE”, if serviced by Al-Futtaim Honda, and “fully transferable to the new owner”; in 2019 it offered a sixth year for AED 200 after an inspection. Both are dated captures; terms may have changed. No official source we found says whether Trading Enterprises will carry out American Honda’s campaigns on an imported Civic. Give Trading Enterprises the VIN and ask before you buy.
American Honda’s extensions: which have lapsed, and what a branded title cancels
For the same oil-dilution concerns, American Honda extended camshaft and rocker-arm cover on certain 2016–2018 Civics to six years from the original sale, so it has lapsed on almost every car. Two air-conditioning extensions run to 10 years from the original purchase: the condenser on 2016–2021 Civics and 2017–2021 Type Rs, and the compressor shaft seal. Both exclude any car “declared a total loss or sold for salvage” or with “a branded or similar title”.
Honda Civic 10th generation faults, recalls and owner reports
Counts are from NHTSA, 15 October 2026. NHTSA files 2016–2021 Civic complaints under CIVIC, CIVIC SI, CIVIC TYPE R, CIVIC HATCHBACK, CIVIC HATCH and CIVIC HATCH TYPE-R, with overlapping search results; merged by complaint number there are 3,133. By partial VIN we left out 12 from other cars (eight older Civics, four other models), leaving 3,121; 83 give no VIN. Each is a US owner’s report, not a proven defect.
The 1.5 turbo, fuel in the oil and cold US states
In December 2018 American Honda extended a CR-V product update to certain 2016–2018 Civics with the 1.5 turbo “in the same 21 states”, for “engine oil dilution due to various control unit software/threshold settings”. Cars “in some cold-weather states” may lose power and store misfire codes P0300 to P0304 or the rich-mixture code P0172; the fix updates engine and transmission software, changes the oil and, after a February 2019 change, reprogrammes rather than replaces the air-conditioning control unit.
It is a product update, not a safety recall, and only 28 complaints about 1.5 turbo Civics mention oil dilution, fuel in the oil or a rising oil level (owner reports). No official source we found says whether Gulf 1.5 turbo Civics were affected or updated; ask Trading Enterprises with the VIN.
Denso fuel pumps that can stop the engine
Three linked recalls replace a Denso fuel pump whose impeller can crack and swell, stalling the engine. 20V-314 covers 2018–2019 Civic hatchbacks and Type Rs built from June 2018 to June 2019; 21V-215 adds 2019 saloons, coupes, Si models, hatchbacks and Type Rs and 2020 hatchbacks; 23V-858 covers 2016–2021 saloons, 2016–2020 coupes, 2017–2020 hatchbacks and 2018–2020 Type Rs. Owners filed 127 complaints naming the fuel pump (owner reports).
Front passenger seat sensor and the other airbag recalls
Recalls 24V-064 and 26V-332 replace the front passenger seat weight sensor, which can crack and short-circuit, so the airbag may deploy for a child or small adult it should have stayed off for. 24V-064 lists 2020 coupes, 2020–2021 saloons, 2021 hatchbacks and 2021 Type Rs; 26V-332 lists 2016–2020 coupes, 2017–2021 hatchbacks, 2017–2018 and 2021 Type Rs and saloons built to May 2021. Honda’s report says the supplemental restraint system (SRS) warning light may come on and the passenger airbag indicator may stay off.
Heavy steering and leaking air-conditioning: many reports, few recalls
Steering is the largest complaint category: 854 complaints describe sticky, notchy or heavy steering or a failed rack, and 488 mention the air-conditioning (owner reports). Recall 18V-663 replaced the steering gearbox on only 54 Civics and CR-Vs built from September 2017 to January 2018, whose loose sensor magnet could reverse steering assist at full lock. NHTSA’s 2023 “sticky steering” investigations concern the next generation, 2022–2023 Civics.
2016 and 2017 build faults: pistons, parking brake and halfshafts
Recall 16V-074 covers 42,129 Civic 2.0 saloons from 2016, built from 22 September 2015 to 3 February 2016 with VINs starting 19XFC2F or 2HGFC2F, whose piston pin clip may be missing, risking a seized engine or fire. Recall 16V-725 updates software on 2016 Civics so the electric parking brake applies when set straight after switching off. 17V-706 replaces a weak right halfshaft on 5,404 saloons and coupes built in August–October 2017, and 16V-526 fixes side-marker lights on 2016 coupes built February–May 2016.
Civic Type R: recalls filed under three names, and its own campaigns
NHTSA files Type R recalls under CIVIC, CIVIC TYPE R and CIVIC TYPE-R: 20V-314 sits under CIVIC, the 2019 Type R line of 21V-215 under CIVIC TYPE-R, and 23V-858 under CIVIC TYPE R. American Honda also ran product updates on a 2017 Type R wiring harness (“Rev Match System Problem” warning) and 2020 Type R cruise-control software, and in 2023 asked dealers for parts from 2017–2021 Type Rs with misfire codes P0300 or P0304.
No official source we found shows Al-Futtaim selling the 2017–2021 Type R: the Internet Archive’s captures of honda.ae hold no page for it, and its later Type R pages cover the 2023 car. Treat a 10th-generation Type R as a likely import and ask Trading Enterprises with the VIN which campaigns it will honour.
Civic recalls and complaint counts for each model year, 2016–2021
Each recall is placed in the complaint category NHTSA files its component under, so recall 16V-074 counts against “engine and engine cooling”, not “engine”. High means an NHTSA recall in that category lists the model year, and the cell shows that category’s complaints for the year. Medium means no recall in the category but a named category (not “unknown or other”) holds 20 or more complaints. Low means neither. No Civic recall record here tells owners to stop driving or park outside. Many recalls cover one body, engine or build window; match those too.

Searching a Civic’s UAE crash records and US auction past
In the UAE: the Ministry of Interior (MOI) and Abu Dhabi Police both list a public accident inquiry by chassis number among their e-services. VINCheckr searches the UAE accident records available to it, from MOI and, during periods when MOI cannot be reached, Abu Dhabi Police; a clean result means none was found in those records.
Before export: VINCheckr searches bid.cars, plc.auction and carsbidshistory.com and links to any listing it finds, with photos where the listing has them. A listing shows the Civic was offered at a US auction at least once, and its title and damage fields show whether it was sold as salvage.
Odometer evidence for a Civic
We found no public UAE odometer record, so dated paperwork is the evidence: Al-Futtaim Honda invoices for a Gulf car; for a US car, the auction listing and a National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) report, sold by the approved providers listed on vehiclehistory.gov for up to about $4, the US Department of Justice says.
Where available, VINCheckr also shows European mileage readings taken from registers and sales listings; few Gulf or US Civics appear in them, so an empty result says nothing about the odometer.
Before entering the VIN: VINCheckr’s recall section lists NHTSA’s US recalls by make, model and year, not Gulf campaigns or whether a repair was made. NHTSA files Type R recalls under three names (CIVIC, CIVIC TYPE R, CIVIC TYPE-R), so on a US-market Type R also run NHTSA’s VIN recall search, and for any Civic ask Trading Enterprises with the VIN.
Checking a Honda Civic 10th generation?
Enter the VIN to check available accident, auction and recall records, plus European mileage readings where available.
VIN places on a 10th-generation Civic
Honda’s US and European manuals for this Civic show the VIN at the base of the windscreen, under a floor cover beside the front passenger seat and on the driver’s-side centre-pillar label, which is a US requirement on US cars.
No official source we found shows the places on a Gulf-market Civic. Ask Trading Enterprises, and take a VIN that differs from the registration card to the police or licensing authority of the emirate where the car is registered.
Before you pay for a 10th-generation Civic: recall-by-recall checks
- Note the body, engine and gearbox; a coupe, hatchback, Si, Type R or manual was not on the Al-Futtaim pages we found.
- Search the VIN’s US title and auction history: Honda’s condenser and compressor-seal extensions end at any salvage or branded title.
- On any 2016–2021 Civic, see dealer proof of the fuel-pump recalls: 23V-858 (2016–2021 saloons, 2016–2020 coupes, 2017–2020 hatchbacks, 2018–2020 Type Rs), 21V-215 (2019 Civics and 2020 hatchbacks in its build windows) and 20V-314 (2018–2019 hatchbacks and Type Rs).
- Check seat-sensor recalls 26V-332 and 24V-064 by body and year, and that the supplemental restraint system (SRS) warning light is off.
- On a 2016 2.0 saloon with a VIN starting 19XFC2F or 2HGFC2F, built September 2015–February 2016, see proof of 16V-074; on every 2016 car, 16V-725; on a 2016 coupe built February–May 2016, 16V-526.
- Ask for 17V-706 on a 2017 saloon or coupe built August–October 2017, 18V-663 (54 cars, by VIN) on one built September 2017–January 2018, 18V-817 on a 2017–2018 hatchback or Type R, 18V-266 on a 2017 one with replaced front seatback pads, and 18V-421 on 13 cars from 2018 with a garbled label date.
- On a 2020–2021 saloon built from October 2020 to May 2021, ask for brake recall 23V-458.
- On a 1.5 turbo, ask whether the oil-dilution software update was done, check the oil on the dipstick as the owner’s manual describes, and smell it for fuel.
- Steering tops this Civic’s complaint categories; at parking speed, turn fully each way and feel for notches.
- Run the air-conditioning on maximum and check it stays cold.
- On a Type R, ask for proof of its fuel-pump and seat-sensor recalls and of any misfire repairs.
- Ask Trading Enterprises, with the VIN, which campaigns it has carried out, and have a mechanic read stored fault codes.
Frequently asked questions
Was the 1.6-litre Civic sold in the United States?
No: the 1.6 appears on Al-Futtaim’s UAE Civic pages from 2017 and in Honda’s Middle East brochure, while American Honda’s 2018 manuals and bulletins list only the 1.5 turbo, the 2.0 and the Type R’s 2.0 turbo. So a 1.6 is a Gulf or general-market car; ask Trading Enterprises for its service record.
Does the Civic’s 1.5 turbo oil-dilution fix apply in the UAE?
No official source we found says so: American Honda’s 2018 product update covered certain 2016–2018 Civics with the 1.5 turbo in 21 cold-weather US states, and its six-year camshaft and rocker-arm extension has run out on almost every car. Ask Trading Enterprises with the VIN whether any update was applied.
Which Honda Civic fuel-pump recall covers my model year?
23V-858 covers 2016–2021 saloons, 2016–2020 coupes, 2017–2020 hatchbacks and 2018–2020 Type Rs; 21V-215 covers 2019 Civics and 2020 hatchbacks; 20V-314 covers 2018–2019 hatchbacks and Type Rs, according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) records. Ask for dealer proof the pump was replaced.
Why are a Civic Type R’s US recalls filed under more than one name?
That is how the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) records them: it files Type R recalls under CIVIC, CIVIC TYPE R and CIVIC TYPE-R, and 20V-314, for one, sits under CIVIC. Run NHTSA’s VIN recall search on a US-market Type R, and ask Trading Enterprises with the VIN.
Can a salvage-title Civic still get Honda’s 10-year air-conditioning cover?
No: American Honda’s condenser and compressor-seal extensions exclude any car declared a total loss, sold for salvage or given a branded title, and they are US programmes. Check the title history, then ask Trading Enterprises what it covers.
