Where to find the VIN on a Honda Civic 10th generation

Quick answer

The eleven Honda owner’s manuals we read for the Honda Civic 10th generation (2017–2021 editions; we found no 2016 one) show its VIN in three places. The first is at the base of the windscreen, on the left (driver’s) side in Honda’s drawing, read from outside. The second is under a cover in the floor beside the front passenger seat, on the right of a left-hand-drive car. The third is the certification label on the driver’s-side centre pillar, seen with the door open. The saloon, coupe and hatchback manuals, including the 2.0-litre hatchback drawing that we take to be the Type R, show the same three places. We found no Gulf-market manual, so before relying on one place, ask Trading Enterprises, Honda’s UAE distributor, where a Gulf Civic carries it.

Eleven Honda manuals compared: three bodies, two markets

We read the “Identification Numbers” page, text and drawing, in nine American Honda manuals: the 2017, 2018 and 2021 saloon, the 2017, 2018 and 2020 coupe, and the 2017, 2018 and 2021 hatchback. These are the years we checked, not an unbroken run; we found no 2016 edition on American Honda’s manual site. Each hatchback manual draws a second car for “2.0 L engine models”, a winged hatchback listed with a manual transmission only; the decoder of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reads the only 2.0-litre hatchback patterns in its 2016–2021 complaint records, SHHFK8, as the Civic Type R, so we take that drawing to be the Type R.

For a general-market view we read two European editions on Honda’s UK site: the 2017 Civic 4dr (1.5 and 1.6 petrol saloons) and the 2017 Civic 5dr (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 hatchbacks). Honda UK offers that same 5dr file as its 2017 Civic Type R manual. All eleven show the same three places.

No official source we found shows where a Gulf-market 10th-generation Civic carries its VIN. Honda’s Middle East website names Trading Enterprises, part of Al-Futtaim Automotive, as Honda’s sole authorised UAE distributor. Its own site, honda.ae, offered digital guides in 2022 only for cars registered after 2020, adding “We can order older manuals, at cost”; we found no Gulf Civic manual in archived copies. Check all three places, and ask Trading Enterprises for the Gulf manual or, with the VIN, where Honda marks that car.

Place 1: the number at the foot of the windscreen

Diagram of a Honda Civic 10th generation four-door saloon seen from the left, marker 1 highlighted: the VIN at the base of the windscreen on the driver’s side, read from outside; marker 2, the floor cover beside the front passenger seat, is dashed on the far side; marker 3 is the centre-pillar label (door open)
Place 1, driver’s side: the VIN at the base of the windscreen, read through the glass. Key: solid markers are on the near side; dashed markers are on the far side. · Diagram: VINCheckr · Diagram, not to scale

Honda draws the car from above, nose to the left, and labels this marker simply “Vehicle Identification Number”. In Honda’s drawing it sits at the foot of the windscreen on the left half, the driver’s side of a left-hand-drive car, in every saloon, coupe and hatchback manual we read, the European ones included. Honda’s text names no side.

Read it through the glass from the driver’s side. On a US-market car, title 49 of the US Code of Federal Regulations, Part 565 (49 CFR Part 565), requires the VIN to be readable through the windscreen beside the left pillar; a Gulf-market Civic is not bound by that US rule.

Place 2: under the flap beside the front passenger seat

Diagram of a Honda Civic 10th generation four-door saloon seen from the left, marker 2 highlighted and dashed because it is on the far side: the interior VIN under a cover in the floor beside the front passenger seat, by the door sill; marker 1 is the windscreen base, marker 3 the centre-pillar label (door open)
Place 2 (far side): the interior VIN under a cover in the floor beside the front passenger seat, next to the door sill. Dashed because it is on the far side of this view. · Diagram: VINCheckr · Diagram, not to scale

Every manual we read says the VIN “is located under the cover”, most of them calling it “the interior vehicle identification number”. A side panel shows a cover lifted from the floor between seat and sill. In Honda’s top view this marker is on the right of the front floor, which is the front passenger’s side of a left-hand-drive car.

The European 5dr manual draws that panel twice, once labelled “Right-hand drive type” and once “Left-hand drive type”, the cover by the sill in both. Slide the front passenger seat back, lift the mat and open the cover.

Place 3: the driver’s-side pillar label, and when its VIN may be missing

Diagram of a Honda Civic 10th generation four-door saloon seen from the left, marker 3 highlighted: the certification label carrying the VIN on the driver’s-side centre pillar, seen with the front door open; marker 2 dashed on the far side (floor cover)
Place 3, driver’s side (door open): the certification label on the centre pillar, where the driver’s door closes. · Diagram: VINCheckr · Diagram, not to scale

The US manuals label this marker “Certification Label/Vehicle Identification Number”, and in Honda’s drawing it sits on the left centre pillar, where the driver’s door closes. Open the door to read it. The European hatchback manual uses the same words, and the European saloon manual calls it a “Certification Plate”. Honda’s European 2017 saloon manual marks the VIN and chassis number on the 1.6’s certification plate “Not available on all models”.

On a US-market car, 49 CFR 567.4 requires a label beside the driver’s seat with the month and year of manufacture and the VIN, fixed so that removing it destroys or defaces it. That is a US rule; a Gulf-market Civic may differ.

Before you enter the VIN: NHTSA keeps US recall records, and VINCheckr lists them by make, model and year, without Gulf campaigns or whether a repair was made. NHTSA files Type R recalls under CIVIC, CIVIC TYPE R and CIVIC TYPE-R, so on a US-market Type R also run NHTSA’s VIN recall search, and for any Civic ask Trading Enterprises with the VIN.

Checking a Honda Civic 10th generation?

Enter the VIN to check available accident, auction and recall records, plus European mileage readings where available.

In the Civic 10th-generation manuals we read, Honda shows the VIN at the base of the windscreen, under a floor cover beside the front passenger seat and on the driver’s-side centre-pillar label.

Saloon, coupe, hatchback or Type R: what the Civic VIN characters say

Characters 1 to 3 are the manufacturer identifier. NHTSA’s register lists 19X as “AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO., INC.”, 2HG as “HONDA OF CANADA MFG., A DIVISION OF HONDA CANADA INC.”, JHM as “HONDA MOTOR CO., LTD.” and SHH as “HONDA OF THE U.K. MFG., LTD.”, all for passenger cars. NHTSA says the first character “generally” indicates a geographic area; its 2024 interpretation letter to Ford Motor Company accepted a US-assigned identifier on vehicles Ford builds abroad for US sale, and NHTSA says the letter does not bind the public. So the identifier alone does not prove where a Civic was built or sold.

How NHTSA’s decoder reads Civic patterns found in its 2015–2022 complaint records (11-character patterns, not real VINs; each decode reports only an incomplete VIN; not every pattern carries every year letter shown)
  • 19XFC1F, 19XFC2F · G (2016) to M (2021)

    Character 11 (plant)
    E: Greensburg, United States
    Decoder reads
    Civic saloon: 1.5 turbo (FC1) or 2.0 (FC2)
  • 2HGFC1F, 2HGFC2F · G to M

    Character 11 (plant)
    H: Alliston, Canada
    Decoder reads
Civic saloon: 1.5 turbo or 2.0
  • JHMFC1F · J (2018), K (2019)

    Character 11 (plant)
    X: Yorii, Japan

    Character 11 (plant)
    U: Swindon, United Kingdom
    Decoder reads
    Civic hatchback, 1.5 turbo
  • SHHFK8G · H to M

    Character 11 (plant)
    U: Swindon
    Decoder reads
Civic Type R, 2.0 turbo hatchback
  • 19XFB2F, 2HGFB2F; 2HGFG3B · F (2015)

    Character 11 (plant)
    E; H
    Decoder reads
Civic saloon or coupe, 1.8 (the ninth generation)
  • 2HGFE1F, 2HGFE2F, JHMFE1F; 19XFL1H, 19XFL2H · N (2022)

    Character 11 (plant)
    H, X; E
    Decoder reads
Civic saloon; Civic hatchback (the 11th generation)

For these patterns, characters 4 and 5 read FC on the saloon and coupe and FK on the hatchback and Type R, where the ninth generation has FB or FG and the 11th FE or FL. Character 6 after FC or FK then splits the bodies: 1 or 2 is a saloon, 3 or 4 a coupe, 7 a hatchback and 8 the Type R. Character 11 is the decoder’s plant reading. These are readings of the patterns shown, not a Honda rule, and year letters repeat every 30 years; NHTSA’s free decoder reads a full VIN.

No official source we found says how Honda codes Gulf-market Civic VINs, and NHTSA’s complaint records hold US cars only. The Gulf 1.6, which American Honda’s US manuals do not list, has no pattern in this table; ask Trading Enterprises what Honda’s records show for the VIN and compare it with the first-registration papers.

Do the windscreen, floor and pillar numbers agree?

Honda’s manuals give one 17-character VIN, used for registration, warranty and insurance; the windscreen, the floor and, where it carries the VIN, the pillar label should all repeat it, as should the registration card. On a US label, a build month well away from the model year in character 10 needs an explanation; a few months early is normal.

Question a floor cover that is glued, missing or surrounded by cut carpet, fresh paint or sealer on the metal beneath it, scratches at the windscreen number, or a pillar label that is loose or reprinted. Get the seller’s answers in writing.

When a Civic’s VIN is scratched, missing or not what the card says

No official source we found gives steps for a Civic whose windscreen, floor or pillar number is missing, damaged or different from the registration card. Stop the sale there: take the car and its papers to the police or the vehicle-licensing authority of the emirate where it is registered, and follow their instructions. Never accept a new label or a re-marked floor arranged by the seller.

For a car registered in Dubai, ask the seller to share a Technical Vehicle Status Report from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The RTA says it covers ownership history but not accidents, and its VIN should match the windscreen, floor and pillar.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the VIN on a 2017–2021 Honda Civic Type R?

In the same three places as other 10th-generation Civics: the base of the windscreen, under the floor cover beside the front passenger seat, and the driver’s-side centre-pillar label. American Honda’s 2017, 2018 and 2021 hatchback manuals draw a separate “2.0 L engine models” hatchback with those places, which we take to be the Type R: the decoder of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reads the only 2.0-litre hatchback patterns in its 2016–2021 complaint records as the Civic Type R. Honda UK offers its 2017 Civic 5dr manual as the Type R manual. Check all three on the car.

Which side of a left-hand-drive Civic hides the floor VIN?

The front passenger’s side: Honda’s top-view drawing puts the interior VIN on the right of the front floor, under a cover by the door sill. Slide the passenger seat back, lift the mat and open the cover.

Which VIN characters mark a Civic saloon, coupe, hatchback or Type R?

Characters 4 to 6, as the decoder of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reads the 10th-generation patterns in its complaint records: FC or FK, then 1 or 2 for a saloon, 3 or 4 for a coupe, 7 for a hatchback and 8 for the Type R. Confirm the full VIN in NHTSA’s free decoder.

Does a Civic VIN starting 2HG or 19X show which country built it?

Not reliably; character 11 is the better clue. The decoder of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reads E as Greensburg in the United States, H as Alliston in Canada, X as Yorii in Japan and U as Swindon in the United Kingdom on these patterns. The first three characters identify the manufacturer; they do not prove the plant. Read character 11 and check the registration papers.

Is the VIN on a Gulf-market Civic in the same places as on a US one?

No official source we found answers that: Honda’s UAE distributor, Trading Enterprises, offered digital guides only for cars registered after 2020 (older manuals at cost), and the manuals we read are US and European editions. Check all three places, and ask Trading Enterprises for the manual or, with the VIN, about any place that is bare.
