Buying a used Hyundai Sonata DN8 (2020 on) in the UAE
Quick answer
The Hyundai Sonata DN8 is the eighth-generation Sonata, sold from the 2020 model year, including the updated car Hyundai launched in March 2023. Juma Al Majid, Hyundai’s exclusive UAE distributor, sold it new here, but many used ones are US imports, and the engine helps tell them apart: Juma Al Majid’s earlier Sonata pages list a 2.5-litre multi-point-injection engine with a six-speed automatic, while US petrol cars have a direct-injection 2.5-litre, a 1.6-litre turbo or the sportier N Line’s 2.5-litre turbo, with eight-speed gearboxes. On a 2020–2023 1.6 turbo, check fuel-tank recall 25V-796 with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for US cars or Juma Al Majid for Gulf cars; on a hybrid, ask about coolant loss and a 12-volt battery that goes flat. A 2015–2019 Sonata, other than the 2015 hybrid, is the earlier LF.

The Hyundai Sonata DN8 in the UAE
Juma Al Majid, which calls itself the exclusive distributor of Hyundai in the UAE, announced the “all-new 2020 Sonata”, the eighth generation, in November 2019, with “a choice of two petrol powertrains” for Middle East and Africa markets. Hyundai Motor Company launched an updated eighth-generation Sonata on 30 March 2023, for sale in global markets from later that year with a 2.5-litre petrol, a 2.5-litre turbo for the N Line and a 2.0-litre hybrid. Hyundai’s owner’s-manual site lists petrol Sonata (DN8) manuals for the UAE for the 2024 to 2027 model years and Sonata Hybrid manuals from 2021. This guide covers the original and the updated car.
Hyundai’s US bulletins call the car “Sonata (DN8)”, and the 2020–2022 cars whose VINs start 5NP “DN8a”. In July 2023, Juma Al Majid named the Sonata Hybrid among its three best-selling Hyundai models in the UAE.
Four things to settle before a Sonata DN8 test drive
- Model year: a 2020-or-later year on the registration card confirms a DN8 rather than the older LF.
- Engine and gearbox: a 2.5 multi-point-injection engine with a six-speed automatic matches Juma Al Majid’s original-shape Gulf car; a 1.6 turbo or an eight-speed points to a US car.
- Recalls for that engine: 25V-796 on a 1.6 turbo, 22V-746 and 21V-524 on an N Line.
- Hybrid health: coolant loss, white exhaust smoke and a 12-volt battery that goes flat.
DN8 or LF: telling the two recent Sonatas apart
The earlier Sonata, the LF (2015–2019 model years, hybrids from 2016; “Sonata (LFA)” in a 2023 Hyundai bulletin), is not covered here; settle which one you have first. The simplest check is the model year on the registration card: 2020 or later means a DN8.
On a US-market car the VIN tells them apart too. In the complaint records of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), every 2015–2019 VIN its decoder reads begins 5NPE2, 5NPE3 or KMHE, and every DN8 VIN begins 5NPE followed by a letter from F to L, or KMHL. The tenth character is the model year under the US VIN rule: K for 2019, L for 2020, M for 2021, and so on. A Gulf-market VIN may follow other patterns, so trust the registration card over a prefix.
Gulf car or US import: what the specification gives away
Juma Al Majid’s Sonata specification page, in Internet Archive captures from December 2022 to April 2025, lists one version: a Smartstream 2.5-litre multi-point-injection (MPi) engine with a six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. Hyundai’s US bulletins describe 2021 US cars with a 1.6-litre turbo or a 2.5-litre engine and an eight-speed automatic, and recall reports add the 2.5-litre turbo of the N Line, which Hyundai pairs with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox. So an original-shape Sonata with a 1.6 turbo or an eight-speed automatic does not match the petrol car Juma Al Majid listed.
The updated car narrows the gap. Juma Al Majid’s current page lists a 2.0-litre hybrid, a 2.5-litre direct-injection (GDi) petrol and the 2.5-litre turbo, and the 2024 general-market manual Hyundai lists for the UAE pairs the 2.5 GDi with an eight-speed automatic and the turbo with a dual-clutch gearbox, the same pairings Hyundai’s US bulletins describe. Hyundai offered all-wheel drive on the US 2.5 GDi from the 2024 model year; Juma Al Majid’s pages list none. That manual recommends a different engine oil for the 2.5 GDi “For Middle East” and says Hyundai does not recommend the car for towing a trailer there.
Juma Al Majid’s undated warranty conditions page sets the period by the warranty booklet, excludes damage from accidents, theft, “water flooding” or fire and any car whose odometer has been altered, and says warranty work is done only by authorised Hyundai distributors or dealers. No official source we found says whether Juma Al Majid covers a Sonata first sold in the US, so give it the VIN and ask before you pay for remaining warranty.
Gulf cars are recalled too: the Qatar Tribune reported on 7 April 2026 that Qatar’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Hyundai dealer Skyline Automotive recalled 2025–2026 Sonatas over instrument cluster reboots. We found no UAE recall notice for the DN8 and no VIN recall search on Hyundai UAE’s site, so ask Juma Al Majid which campaigns apply to the VIN.
Gulf spec vs US spec: what actually differs
Salvage history, flood signs and counterfeit airbags on a Sonata
For a car from the US, check its title brands in a National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) report, sold by the approved providers listed on vehiclehistory.gov for up to about $4, the US Department of Justice says (a search can miss records), and read the damage fields and photos of any auction listing. In an alert to dealers on 9 April 2026, Hyundai Motor America passed on an NHTSA warning about counterfeit driver airbag inflators made by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System, found in US vehicles after crashes, theft or uncertified airbag replacement. Hyundai told dealers to advise an inspection for cars with a salvage or rebuild history and said a car with a suspected counterfeit inflator should not be driven until a genuine part is fitted.
For water damage, NHTSA lists mud, waterlines and unusual rust among the signs, and Juma Al Majid’s warranty conditions exclude damage from flooding.
Salvage and rebuilt titles: what they mean for a UAE buyer
Common Hyundai Sonata DN8 problems by engine
Counts are from NHTSA, 15 October 2026. NHTSA files 2020–2026 Sonatas under six model names, and the hybrid names hold records of their own: 688 complaints after removing duplicates. We sorted them by the partial VIN owners give: one that NHTSA’s decoder reads as a Lincoln is left out and none reads as an LF, leaving 687, of which 7 carry no VIN. Each complaint is a US owner’s report, not a confirmed defect, so match each problem below to the engine of the car you are looking at.
1.6-litre turbo: the fuel-tank recall (2020–2023)
Hyundai’s report for recall 25V-796 covers 85,043 US 2020–2023 Sonatas with the 1.6-litre turbo: a worn purge-valve check valve lets compressed air from the turbo into the fuel tank, which can deform, touch the exhaust and leak fuel. It lists a “pop” from the rear, a warning light, a car that will not start and a fuel smell as warnings; dealers replace the valve, inspect or replace the tank and update the engine computer. It followed emissions campaign 9B1 of November 2024. Of 102 complaints describing the tank, 93 concern 1.6 turbo cars (owner reports).
2.5-litre non-turbo: injector misfires (2021–2023)
Hyundai’s bulletin 25-FL-001H says the injectors of the 2.5-litre direct-injection engine (non-turbo) can leak internally after their filter breaks, causing misfires; dealers replace all four. It applies to 2021–2023 Sonatas built from February 2021 to January 2023, and 2021–2022 cars whose VINs start 5NP, built from March 2021 to February 2022. Owners of 2021–2023 cars with this engine filed 37 complaints naming the injectors, 27 of them describing lost power or stalling (owner reports).
Sonata Hybrid: coolant and the 12-volt battery
Bulletin 23-EM-009H says 2020–2023 Sonata Hybrids built up to 14 November 2023 can lose coolant, overheat and blow white smoke because of an internal leak in the Exhaust Heat Recovery System (EHRS) part of the centre silencer. Separately, Hyundai’s campaign 9B4 updates the battery-management software of 2020–2022 hybrids that show a 12-volt lithium battery over-voltage warning. Of the hybrid complaints, 28 mention coolant or the heat recovery system and 38 a 12-volt battery that dies or needs the reset button (owner reports).
N Line 2.5-litre turbo: dual-clutch gearbox and fuel pipe
Recall 22V-746 covers 6,840 US 2021–2022 Sonatas whose transmission high-pressure electric oil pump can fault, leaving about 20–30 seconds of drive before all drive is lost; Hyundai’s bulletins tie this recall (its number 236) to the eight-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox, and dealers inspect or replace the gearbox and update its software. Recall 21V-524 covers 3,231 2.5 turbo cars built at Hyundai’s Alabama plant from 14 October 2020 to 24 June 2021 whose high-pressure fuel pipe may leak.
Other recalls, battery drain and theft
Recall 23V-526 covers 1,143 2023 Sonatas built from 26 October 2022 to 3 April 2023 whose Idle Stop & Go electric oil pump controller can overheat and start a fire; NHTSA’s record advises parking outside and away from buildings until it is repaired. Others: parking-assist software on early 2020 cars (20V-213), windscreen bonding on 2021 cars built from 29 October to 17 December 2020 (21V-00M), flashing brake lights on 2024 cars (24V-583) and instrument display software on 2026 cars (26V-047). Hyundai Motor America’s 2026 limited-coverage campaigns LA29 and LA30 also update the air-conditioning controller of certain 2024–2026 Sonatas that can drain the battery when parked.
Hyundai’s anti-theft software campaign for cars without an engine immobiliser lists the Sonata only for the 2011–2019 model years, so no DN8 is part of it.
Hyundai Sonata DN8 problems by model year
Each recall is placed in the complaint category NHTSA files its component under; High means an NHTSA recall in that category lists the model year, and the cell shows that category’s complaints for the year. Medium means no recall in the category, but a named category (not “unknown or other”) holds 20 or more complaints that year. Low means neither. Many recalls cover one engine only, so check the engine as well as the year.

How to check a Hyundai Sonata DN8’s accident history
In the UAE: the Ministry of Interior (MOI) and Abu Dhabi Police both list a public accident inquiry by chassis number among their e-services. VINCheckr searches the UAE accident records available to it, from MOI and, during periods when MOI cannot be reached, Abu Dhabi Police; a clean result means none was found in those records.
Before export: VINCheckr searches bid.cars, plc.auction and carsbidshistory.com and links to any listing it finds, with photos where the listing has them. A listing shows the Sonata was offered at a US auction at least once, and its title and damage fields show whether it was sold as salvage.
How to check a Sonata DN8’s mileage
We found no public UAE record of past odometer readings, so gather dated paperwork: Juma Al Majid service invoices for a Gulf car, and for a US car the auction listing and the NMVTIS report. A US-market Sonata reads in miles. Juma Al Majid’s warranty conditions exclude any car whose odometer has been altered.
VINCheckr adds European mileage readings where available, from registers and sales listings. Few Gulf or US Sonatas have any, so an empty result says nothing about the odometer.
One limit to know before you enter the VIN: VINCheckr’s recall section shows NHTSA’s US recalls by make, model and year, not Gulf campaigns, and not whether the work has been done on this car. NHTSA files hybrid recalls separately, under names such as SONATA HYBRID and SONATA HEV, so for a US-market hybrid also run NHTSA’s VIN recall search, and take the list to Juma Al Majid to ask which items apply to the VIN.
Checking a Hyundai Sonata DN8?
Enter the VIN to check available accident, auction and recall records, plus European mileage readings where available.
Where to find the VIN on a Hyundai Sonata DN8
Hyundai’s manuals put the Sonata DN8 VIN in three places: the floor under the front passenger seat, under a cover; a dashboard plate seen through the windscreen; and the centre-pillar certification label. The 2024, 2026 and 2027 manuals mark the first two “if equipped”. All should match the registration card.
Hyundai Sonata DN8 inspection checklist
- Check the model year on the registration card (2020 or later for a DN8) and that the VIN under the passenger seat cover matches it.
- Note the engine and gearbox, then ask Juma Al Majid with the VIN whether the car was supplied in the UAE and which campaigns were done.
- For a car from the US, look up title brands, read every auction listing and run NHTSA’s recall search by VIN.
- On a 2020–2023 1.6 turbo, ask for proof of recall 25V-796 and smell for fuel around the rear of the car.
- If recall 23V-526 is open on a 2023 car, park it outside and away from buildings until the repair is done.
- On a hybrid, check the coolant level cold, watch for white exhaust smoke and ask whether the 12-volt battery has ever gone flat.
- On an N Line, ask for proof of recalls 22V-746 and 21V-524 before the test drive, then drive away from rest several times and watch for gearbox warnings.
- If the title or an auction listing shows a past crash or airbag deployment, have a Hyundai dealer inspect the driver airbag inflator before you drive the car.
- Have a mechanic read stored codes, check for misfires and look under the carpets and the car for repairs, leaks and flood marks.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know whether a Hyundai Sonata is a DN8 or the older LF?
By model year: Sonatas of the 2020 model year on are the DN8, and 2015–2019 cars are the LF. On a US-market car, the VINs in the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) complaint records begin 5NPE plus a letter F to L, or KMHL, for the DN8, against 5NPE2, 5NPE3 or KMHE for 2015–2019 cars. Check the registration card’s model year first.
Did Juma Al Majid sell the 1.6 turbo Sonata DN8 in the UAE?
Probably not: Juma Al Majid’s Sonata specification page, captured from 2022 to 2025, lists only a 2.5-litre multi-point-injection engine with a six-speed automatic; its launch release mentions two petrol engines but names neither, and its current page lists a 2.5-litre, a 2.5-litre turbo and a hybrid. Treat a 1.6 turbo Sonata as a likely import and ask Juma Al Majid about its VIN.
Is it safe to drive a Sonata DN8 with the fuel-tank recall still open?
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) record carries no stop-driving or park-outside advice for recall 25V-796, but Hyundai’s report lists a “pop” from the rear, a warning light, a no-start and a fuel smell as signs of a damaged tank. Have a Hyundai dealer carry out the repair before you buy, and walk away from a car that smells of fuel.
Why does a Sonata Hybrid go completely dead?
Owners of Sonata Hybrids, mostly 2021–2022 cars, describe a 12-volt lithium battery that drains until the doors will not unlock, needing the reset button; Hyundai’s campaign 9B4 updates the battery-management software of 2020–2022 hybrids with an over-voltage warning. Ask the seller how often it happened and for proof of the update.
Is the Hyundai Sonata DN8 covered by the Hyundai anti-theft settlement?
No: Hyundai’s anti-theft campaign, which covers the US settlement’s cars without an engine immobiliser, lists the Sonata only for 2011–2019, and the settlement is open only to US owners. If a seller offers that campaign as a selling point, check the model year on the registration card.
VINCheckr data
VINCheckr’s figures below count manufacturer codes; they do not show how many cars were imported from the US.
- VINs checked on VINCheckr
- 102
- VIN starts with 1–5 (North American manufacturer code)
- 47%
- US auction history found
- at least 29%
- UAE accident records found
- at least 9%
How these figures are calculated (2026-03-13 to 2026-10-15)
- Aggregated, anonymised VINCheckr checks. Repeat checks of one VIN count once (latest check); reused reports are excluded.
- Model figures count only checks whose make, model and model year map to that generation, leaving out VIN prefixes that mark another model or generation; the all-vehicle figures count every check with a decoded make.
- A VIN starting with 1–5 carries a North American manufacturer code. Such cars are usually, but not always, built in North America (NHTSA interpretation letter NCC-240821-001, 2024), and the code does not show where the car was first sold or registered.
- Auction share: checks with at least one listing on bid.cars, plc.auction or carsbidshistory.com. Listings on bid.cars and plc.auction were not searched from 15 May to 7 October 2026, so the true share is likely higher.
- Accident share: checks with at least one UAE police accident record (Ministry of Interior or Abu Dhabi Police); checks where the MOI lookup timed out or did not complete are excluded. A minimum, not an exact rate.
- Figures are shown only for groups of at least 100 unique VINs.
