Where to find the VIN on a Hyundai Sonata DN8

Quick answer

Hyundai’s owner’s manuals give three places for the Hyundai Sonata DN8 VIN. The VIN sits in the floor under the front passenger seat, under a cover in most manuals. A plate on top of the dashboard repeats it, read from outside through the windscreen; the manuals that name a side put it on the left, the driver’s side of a UAE car. The certification label on the centre pillar carries it too, on the driver’s side, or the front passenger’s in the general-market and 2024 US manuals. The general-market manuals we read, and Hyundai’s 2024 US manual, mark the floor number or the plate “if equipped”. In the complaint records of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Sonata DN8 VINs begin 5NPE followed by a letter from F to L, or KMHL, while 2015–2019 Sonatas begin 5NPE2, 5NPE3 or KMHE.

Which Hyundai manuals this page is based on

We read the identification page, text and drawings, of nine Sonata DN8 manuals on Hyundai’s owner’s-manual site. US market: the 2020 Sonata Hybrid, the 2021 Sonata (the original shape) and the 2024 Sonata (the updated car). General market (the site lists Sonata 2024–2027 and Sonata Hybrid 2021–2027 for the UAE): the 2021, 2023 and 2026 Hybrid and the 2024, 2026 and 2027 Sonata. We found no 2020 US petrol or 2020–2023 Gulf petrol manual; years not read may differ.

Place 1: the plate on top of the dashboard, behind the windscreen

The 2024 US manual and every general-market manual we read say: “The VIN is also on a plate attached to the top of the left side dashboard. The number on the plate can easily be seen through the windshield from outside.” The 2020 Hybrid and 2021 US manuals say “the top of the dashboard”, naming no side. Hyundai’s drawing (ODN8019026L in the earlier manuals, redrawn later) shows the plate under the glass at the foot of the windscreen, beside the windscreen pillar and the door mirror. Stand by the driver’s door and look down through the corner of the windscreen.

The drawing is captioned “VIN label (if equipped)” in the general-market 2021 and 2023 Hybrid manuals, the 2024, 2026 and 2027 general-market Sonata manuals and the 2024 US manual; the 2026 general-market Hybrid manual marks the whole VIN section “if equipped”. On a US-market car, title 49 of the US Code of Federal Regulations, Part 565 (49 CFR Part 565), requires a VIN that can be read through the glass from beside the left windscreen pillar.

Place 2: the number punched into the floor under the front passenger seat

Hyundai calls this the frame number, and every manual says the VIN is the number used in registering the car and in all legal matters about its ownership. Where it is, by manual: “under the passenger seat” (2020 Hybrid and 2021 US); “under the right front seat” (general-market 2021 and 2023 Hybrid, 2024 US); “under the front passenger seat” (general-market 2024, 2026 and 2027 Sonata and 2026 Hybrid). All but the 2020 and 2021 US manuals add: “To check the number, open the cover.” Hyundai’s drawing shows a long cover in the floor beside the seat runner. Open the front passenger door, slide the seat back, lift the mat and open the flap; do not cut or prise anything.

The 2024, 2026 and 2027 general-market manuals and the 2024 US manual caption this drawing “Frame number (if equipped)”. No official source we found says which Sonata DN8 cars leave the factory without it. If you find no number under the cover, do not assume it was removed: read the plate and the label, and ask Juma Al Majid, which calls itself Hyundai’s exclusive UAE distributor, where Hyundai marks that VIN.

Place 3: the certification label on the centre pillar

Diagram of a Hyundai Sonata DN8 four-door fastback saloon seen from the left, marker 3 highlighted: the vehicle certification label low on the driver’s-side centre pillar (door open), which Hyundai’s general-market and 2024 US manuals say can be on the front passenger’s side; marker 1 is the dashboard plate and marker 2, dashed, the floor number on the far side; rounded squares mark places that some of Hyundai’s manuals label “if equipped”
Place 3, driver’s side (door open): the vehicle certification label low on the centre pillar; Hyundai’s general-market and 2024 US manuals say it can be on the front passenger’s side instead. · Diagram: VINCheckr · Diagram, not to scale

Open a front door and look low on the centre pillar, the post the door closes against. The 2020 Hybrid and 2021 US manuals say “The vehicle certification label attached on the driver’s side center pillar gives the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).” The 2024 US manual and every general-market manual we read say “driver’s (or front passenger’s) side”, so check both pillars. The tyre-pressure label sits on the same pillar in the 2024 US and 2026 general-market Hybrid drawings; read the label that carries the 17-character VIN.

For a US-market car, 49 CFR 567.4 requires the label next to the driver’s seat, showing the month and year of manufacture and the VIN, and fixed so that it cannot be removed without being destroyed or defaced. That is a US rule; the general-market manuals describe a label on the driver’s or front passenger’s centre pillar that gives the VIN, and say nothing of a manufacture date.

VINCheckr lists the recalls that the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) records for Sonatas of the model year, not Gulf campaigns or whether a recall is open on this car. NHTSA files hybrid recalls separately, under names such as SONATA HYBRID and SONATA HEV: on a US-market hybrid also run NHTSA’s VIN recall search, and on any Sonata ask Juma Al Majid with the VIN.

In the Sonata DN8 manuals we read, Hyundai puts the VIN in the floor under the front passenger seat (under a cover), on a dashboard plate read through the windscreen and on the centre-pillar certification label; its 2024, 2026 and 2027 manuals mark the first two “if equipped”.

What 5NP, KMH and the letters after them say about a Sonata

The first three characters are the manufacturer identifier. NHTSA’s register lists 5NP under the manufacturer name “HYUNDAI-KIA AMERICA TECHNICAL CENTER INC (HATCI)” and KMH under “HYUNDAI MOTOR CO”, both for passenger cars. The first character is a region code, not proof of where a car was built or sold: NHTSA says it “generally” identifies a geographic area, and in a 2024 interpretation letter it told Ford Motor Company that Ford may use one of its US-assigned identifiers on vehicles it builds outside the US for sale there. Under the US VIN rule, character 10 is the model year and character 11 the plant.

How NHTSA’s decoder reads Sonata VIN patterns (11-character patterns as found in NHTSA’s complaint records for those years, not real VINs)
  • 5NPEF4JA, 5NPEG4JA, 5NPEL4JA · L (2020) to N (2022)

    Character 11 (plant)
    H, Alabama
    Decoder reads
    Sonata, 2.5 petrol
  • 5NPEH4J2, 5NPEJ4J2 · L (2020) to N (2022)

    Character 11 (plant)
    H, Alabama
    Decoder reads
    Sonata, 1.6 turbo petrol
  • 5NPEK4JC · M (2021) and N (2022)

    Character 11 (plant)
    H, Alabama
    Decoder reads
    Sonata N Line, 2.5 turbo
  • KMHL14JA, KMHL24JA, KMHL64JA · M (2021) to S (2025)

    Character 11 (plant)
    A, Asan, South Korea
    Decoder reads
    Sonata, 2.5 petrol
  • KMHL34J2, KMHL44J2 · M (2021) to P (2023)

    Character 11 (plant)
    A, Asan
    Decoder reads
    Sonata, 1.6 turbo petrol
  • KMHL14JC; KMHL54JC · N (2022) and P (2023); R (2024) to T (2026)

    Character 11 (plant)
    A, Asan
    Decoder reads
Sonata, 2.5 turbo (trims including N Line)
  • KMHL24JJ, KMHL34JJ, KMHL54JJ · L (2020) to T (2026)

    Character 11 (plant)
    A, Asan
    Decoder reads
    Sonata, 2.0 petrol hybrid
  • 5NPE24AF, 5NPE34AF, 5NPE34AB · K (2019)

    Character 11 (plant)
    H, Alabama
    Decoder reads
Sonata, 2.4 petrol or 2.0 turbo (the previous Sonata, coded LF)
  • KMHE14L, KMHE24L, KMHE34L, KMHE54L (seven characters) · K (2019)

    Character 11 (plant)
    A, Asan
    Decoder reads
Sonata Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid, 2.0 (the LF)

Three things follow for these patterns. A DN8 has a letter from F to L, or KMHL; the LF (2015–2019) has a 2 or a 3, or KMHE on 2016–2019 hybrids. In the KMHL patterns, the eighth character J is the hybrid, while A, 2 and C are petrol. And character 11 reads H for Hyundai’s Alabama plant and A for Asan. These are decoder readings of the patterns shown, not a Hyundai rule, and year letters repeat every 30 years. Enter the full VIN in NHTSA’s free decoder for the trim and engine.

No official source we found sets out how Gulf-market Sonata DN8 VINs are coded, and NHTSA’s records hold only US cars. Do not reject a Gulf car because its VIN fits none of these rows; ask Juma Al Majid what the VIN shows in Hyundai’s records and compare it with the first-registration papers.

Comparing the Sonata DN8’s numbers with the registration card

The floor number, the dashboard plate, the pillar label and the registration card should carry the same 17 characters. On a US-market label, a month and year of manufacture far from the model year in character 10 needs an explanation; a few months before the model year is normal.

Ask questions if the floor cover is missing or glued down, the metal around the number is freshly painted, welded or cut, the plate sits loose under the windscreen, or the label looks reprinted. Get the seller’s answers in writing.

A Sonata DN8 VIN that is rusted, cut or different from the papers

No official source we found sets out a UAE procedure for a Sonata whose VIN is unreadable, tampered with or unlike the registration card. Before paying, put the car in front of the police or the licensing authority of the emirate where it is registered and do as they say; never arrange a new plate, label or stamping privately.

In Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) offers a Technical Vehicle Status Report on a registered used car, with details such as its ownership history, once the owner agrees to share the data; the RTA says the report leaves out accidents. Ask the seller for one and check that its VIN matches all three places.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I see a VIN under the passenger seat of my Hyundai Sonata DN8?

Because it is under a cover in the floor: Hyundai’s manuals say the number is punched into the floor under the front passenger seat and to “open the cover” to check it. Hyundai’s 2024, 2026 and 2027 manuals also mark it “if equipped”. Slide the seat back, lift the mat and open the flap; if there is still nothing, read the dashboard plate and pillar label and ask Hyundai’s UAE distributor, Juma Al Majid.

Do the UAE manuals for the Sonata DN8 show the VIN in different places from the US ones?

No, the places are the same in the general-market and US manuals we read: all show the floor under the front passenger seat, the dashboard plate and the centre-pillar label. The wording differs: the 2020 Hybrid and 2021 US manuals name only the driver’s-side pillar and no dashboard side. Check all three places on any Sonata DN8.

How can the VIN tell a Sonata DN8 Hybrid from a petrol one?

On US-market cars, by the eighth character: the decoder of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reads KMHL24JJ, KMHL34JJ and KMHL54JJ patterns as the 2.0 hybrid, and A, 2 or C in that place as petrol. Every 2020–2026 hybrid pattern in NHTSA’s complaint records starts KMHL. Confirm on the full VIN in NHTSA’s free decoder.

Was my Sonata DN8 built in Alabama or in Korea?

Character 11 gives the plant reading: the decoder of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reads H as Hyundai’s Alabama plant and A as Asan, South Korea, on the Sonata DN8 patterns in its complaint records. The first characters, 5NP or KMH, are not proof of where a car was built. Read character 11 and check the registration papers.

Is a Sonata Hybrid whose VIN starts KMHE a DN8?

Not on the records we checked: in the complaint records of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), KMHE appears only on Sonata hybrid and plug-in hybrid patterns of the 2015–2019 model years, which its decoder places at Asan, while every 2020–2026 hybrid pattern starts KMHL. Check the model year on the registration card: the DN8 starts with the 2020 model year.
