Buying a used Nissan Altima L34 (2019 on) in the UAE

Quick answer

The Nissan Altima L34 is the sixth-generation Altima, sold from the 2019 model year with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine or, up to 2024, a 2.0-litre VC-Turbo, always with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) automatic. Before buying one in the UAE, run the VIN through the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall search and ask for proof that open recalls were repaired. The most serious is recall 25V-437 for the VC-Turbo engine: NHTSA’s recall record lists 2019–2020 cars and its July 2025 investigation report says 2019–2021. The engine bearings may fail, and a failure can in some cases start an engine fire. NHTSA lists no CVT recall for these years, but owners have filed complaints about hesitation and overheating warnings, so test-drive the car hot. Check the UAE accident record and any US auction history, and match the VIN on the dashboard, the chassis marking and the papers.

The Nissan Altima L34 in the UAE

Nissan unveiled the L34 Altima for the Middle East in Dubai in February 2019 and put the 2.5-litre car on sale that month, with the 2.0-litre turbo following in the summer. The same generation was built for the United States at Nissan’s plants in Smyrna, Tennessee and Canton, Mississippi, so a used UAE Altima may be a local-agent car or a US import.

Nissan’s own documents use the code L34 for this generation: a December 2018 recall bulletin names the “MY2019 Altima (L34)”, and the owner’s manuals for 2019 to 2026 carry L34 in their publication numbers. The 2013–2018 Altima is the earlier L33, with its own recalls and continuously variable transmission (CVT) warranty history.

Buying a used Nissan Altima L33 (2013–2018) in the UAE

What to check first on a used Altima L34

  • The engine: the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall record lists the 2019–2020 Altima with the 2.0-litre VC-Turbo (KR20DDET) under recall 25V-437, and NHTSA’s July 2025 investigation closing report says 2019–2021; ask for the dealer’s record of the recall work.
  • Open recalls: enter the VIN in NHTSA’s recall search; it shows unrepaired US recalls, though not a recall involving an international vehicle.
  • The CVT: a long test drive in traffic and on a motorway, watching for hesitation, jerking or a “CVT (AT) Hot” warning.
  • The fluid history: Nissan specifies its own NS-3 CVT fluid and warns that other fluids can damage the transmission.
  • Accident and auction history: UAE police records for the car’s time in the UAE, and US auction listings and title brands if it came from the US.
  • The VIN: it must match on the dashboard plate, the chassis marking and the registration card, and on a US-market car the driver’s door-pillar label.

Common Nissan Altima L34 problems by system

This section is built from NHTSA’s US recall and complaint records for the 2019–2025 Altima, retrieved on 14 October 2026, and from Nissan’s documents. A complaint is an owner’s report to NHTSA: it shows what owners experienced, not a confirmed defect.

Engine: the VC-Turbo bearing recall

The L34 has two petrol engines, both four-cylinder with a timing chain: the 2.5-litre PR25DD and the 2.0-litre KR20DDET, Nissan’s variable-compression turbo. The VC-Turbo appears in the owner’s manuals up to 2024; the 2025 and 2026 manuals list only the 2.5-litre.

In December 2023 NHTSA opened investigation PE23-023 after owners reported engine knocking and loss of power, covering the 2019–2021 Altima among other Nissan and Infiniti models with VC-Turbo engines. It found bearing failures caused by a manufacturing defect and closed in July 2025 with recall 25V-437. NHTSA’s recall record lists the 2019–2020 Altima; NHTSA’s July 2025 investigation closing report says 2019–2021. According to NHTSA, a failed bearing can stop the engine, and in some cases a broken part can hole the block and let oil reach hot surfaces, starting a fire. In that report, NHTSA said US dealers would inspect the oil pan of a 2.0-litre car for metal debris, change the oil if none was found and replace the engine if debris was confirmed, and that Nissan would extend the warranty to 10 years or 120,000 miles after the inspection. NHTSA’s current recall record describes the remedy as reprogramming the engine control module software, with owner letters mailed on 8 April 2026.

Two early fuel-system recalls apply to 2019 cars: 18V-922, for a fuel-tube clip that may not be locked and can cause a leak or a stall, and 19V-316, for a fuel-pump lock ring on front-wheel-drive 2.5-litre cars. Nissan’s manual counts hot-weather stop-and-go traffic and dusty roads as severe operating conditions that call for extra maintenance, so ask how the car was serviced.

CVT transmission: complaints, not recalls

Every Altima L34 uses a CVT. NHTSA lists no transmission recall for the 2019–2025 Altima, and Nissan’s CVT warranty extensions filed with NHTSA in 2019 and 2023 name only the earlier L33 Altima (2013–2016 and 2017–2018), not the L34. Complaints exist but are a small share of the total: NHTSA’s power-train category holds 37 complaints across 2019–2025, the most for 2020, and 28 complaint descriptions mention the CVT or the transmission.

In those complaints, owners describe delayed acceleration from a stop, jerking, limp mode and a “CVT (AT) Hot / Power Reduced” warning. Nissan’s manuals explain that warning: the CVT has a high-fluid-temperature protection mode that cuts engine power when the fluid gets too hot, for example on steep climbs in high temperatures with a heavy load. They also say to use Genuine NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-3 or an equivalent, because other fluids may damage the transmission and that damage is not covered by Nissan’s warranty.

Steering, suspension and tyres

Steering recalls on the L34 are narrow. Recall 21V-138 covered 2,407 Canton-built 2020–2021 cars whose tie-rod ball-joint fasteners may not have been tightened, which can detach the joint and cause a loss of steering; Nissan estimated about 1 % had the defect. Two tyre recalls, 21V-169 and 20V-685, cover 2019–2020 cars on Continental tyres that may have been over-cured and can break in the sidewall. Suspension complaints are few, 19 across all years, so NHTSA’s records do not point to a common suspension fault; have any clunk or wander checked, and confirm the steering recalls are done.

Cooling and air conditioning

NHTSA lists no cooling-system recall for the L34. Owners have filed complaints, most of them about 2019 cars, describing the engine overheating, warm air from the vents with the air conditioning on and an “Engine Malfunction, Power Reduced” message; 15 complaint descriptions across 2019–2021 mention overheating or coolant. These are owner reports, not a confirmed defect. On a test drive, let the car idle with the air conditioning on until the fan cycles, and watch the temperature gauge.

Electronics, cameras and driver assistance

Electrical faults are the largest complaint category for the L34, with 144 complaints, followed, among named categories, by forward collision avoidance with 108. Owners describe the automatic emergency braking applying the brakes with nothing ahead, warning lights coming on together, and the infotainment screen or reversing-camera image freezing or going blank. Nissan’s own manual says the system “may unexpectedly apply partial braking” in some road or traffic conditions. Two recalls cover the reversing camera: 19V-654, a software fix for 2019 cars whose display settings could hide the image, and 23V-628, for a camera harness that can be damaged on some 2019–2021 Altima Platinum cars. A 2019 recall, 19V-235, covers a brake-switch bracket that can keep the brake lights on and let the gear lever leave Park without the brake pressed.

Body, doors and interior

Recall 20V-570 replaced the rear window glass on some 2020 cars because it may not stay secured. The 2025 model year has two recalls: 26V-023, for door strikers that may be badly welded and break, letting a door open while moving, and 26V-526, for front passenger and knee airbags fitted with the wrong mounting fasteners, which may stop them deploying as intended. On a 2025 car, ask for proof that both were done; the second campaign’s owner letters only went out in September 2026.

Nissan Altima L34 problems by model year

How severity is rated in this table: High means an NHTSA safety recall lists that model year for the issue. Medium means there is no recall for the issue, but an NHTSA complaint category holds 20 or more complaints for that year. Low means no recall and no category with 20 or more complaints. A complaint category that a recall covers in part in the same year is left out of the Medium rows and is shown, with its complaint count, in that year’s High row instead: engine in 2019 and 2020 (recall 25V-437) and steering in 2020 (recall 21V-138).

GCC-spec vs imported Altima L34

A US-market Altima carries a Federal/Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard certification label on the driver’s-side centre pillar, which US rules require and which shows the month and year of manufacture and the VIN. Check that label, the customs papers and the registration history together. The VIN prefix alone does not settle the question: Altimas sold in the US typically carry the manufacturer code 1N4, which NHTSA registers to Nissan North America, and NHTSA has said that a manufacturer code need not show the country of manufacture. No official source we found says where Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market Altimas were built.

The practical differences are documented for warranty and recalls. Nissan North America’s 2022 warranty booklet covers cars originally sold by a US Nissan dealer, registered in the US and normally operated in the US, its territories or Canada, and does not apply once a car is relocated elsewhere, so the warranty extension NHTSA described for recall 25V-437 in July 2025 should not be assumed to follow an imported car. NHTSA says its VIN search will not show a recall involving an international vehicle. Ask Nissan’s UAE agent whether it carries out the US recall repairs on an imported car before you buy.

Nissan’s Middle East launch announcement names the 2.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbo engines but not the drive layout, and no official source we found lists which Altima versions the UAE agent sold in each year. Ask Nissan’s UAE agent which engines and drive layouts it sold for the car’s model year; an all-wheel-drive car or a VC-Turbo that does not match deserves a question about its origin.

How to check a Nissan Altima L34’s accident history

For the car’s time in the UAE, police accident records are the main source: drivers in the UAE report accidents to the police. VINCheckr searches the UAE accident records available to it, from the Ministry of Interior (MOI) and, during periods when MOI cannot be reached, Abu Dhabi Police; a clean result means no accident was found in those records, not that the car was never damaged. For an Altima that came from the US, look for damage before it arrived. A US car written off as a total loss is typically sold at a salvage auction; VINCheckr links to any listing it finds, with photos where the listing has them. Title brands such as salvage and flood show in a National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) report, sold by the approved providers listed on vehiclehistory.gov for up to about $4, the US Department of Justice says; NMVTIS warns that a search can miss records. NHTSA’s signs of flood damage include a musty smell, mud or waterlines inside, including the boot and under the dashboard, and unusual rust underneath.

On a US-market car, compare the build month and year on the door-pillar label with the seller’s story, and check that the label has not been removed or replaced.

How to check the mileage

No public UAE source we found offers a single odometer history for a car, so compare every reading you can find. For an imported Altima, compare the reading with any US auction listing and with the NMVTIS report, checking whether each figure is in miles or kilometres. Service records from a Nissan dealer, with dates and readings, are the strongest evidence.

VINCheckr adds European mileage readings where available, from registers and sales listings; they are rare for cars kept in the UAE or the US, so treat “no readings found” as no data rather than proof of a correct odometer.

VINCheckr’s recall section lists the US recalls NHTSA holds for an Altima of that model year; it shows neither Gulf campaigns nor whether a repair was made on this VIN, so take the list to Nissan’s UAE agent, with the VIN, as questions.

On a Nissan Altima L34 the VIN is on the driver’s-side dashboard plate, the driver’s-side centre pillar label (US-market cars) and the floor in front of the front passenger seat.

Where to find the VIN on a Nissan Altima L34

The Nissan Altima L34 VIN is on a plate on top of the dashboard on the driver’s side, read through the windscreen; on a US-market car, on the certification label on the driver’s-side centre pillar; and on the floor in front of the front passenger seat, where Nissan’s drawing shows the chassis number. Every VIN you can find must match the others and the registration card; a mismatch is a reason to walk away.

Nissan Altima L34 inspection checklist

  1. Match the VIN on the dashboard plate, the chassis marking, the registration card and, on a US-market car, the door-pillar label.
  2. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall search and ask for repair records for every campaign that lists the car’s year.
  3. On a 2019–2020 2.0-litre VC-Turbo, ask for the record that the 25V-437 recall work was completed; on a 2021 VC-Turbo, check the VIN. Listen for knocking at idle and under load.
  4. Start the engine from cold and check that no warning lights stay on after start-up.
  5. Drive for at least 30 minutes, including stop-and-go traffic and a motorway run, and note any hesitation, jerking or CVT temperature warning.
  6. Idle with the air conditioning on until the radiator fan cycles, and watch the temperature gauge and the air from the vents.
  7. Test the reversing camera, the infotainment screen and every warning chime.
  8. Check for steering play or knocking over bumps, and read the tyre date codes.
  9. Look for signs of flood or crash repair: mud or waterlines inside, unusual rust underneath, uneven panel gaps and fresh paint.
  10. Ask for service records showing CVT fluid and engine oil changes, then have an independent mechanic inspect the car.

Frequently asked questions

Which years are the Nissan Altima L34?

The Nissan Altima L34 covers the 2019 model year onward; Nissan’s 2026 Altima owner’s manual still carries the L34 code. The 2013–2018 Altima is the earlier L33 generation, which has its own VINCheckr buying guide, so check the model year on the registration card before you choose which to read.

Is there a CVT recall on the Nissan Altima L34?

No. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lists no transmission recall for the 2019–2025 Altima, and Nissan’s continuously variable transmission (CVT) warranty extensions filed with NHTSA cover US-market L33 Altimas (2013–2018). Owners have filed a few CVT complaints, so a long test drive is still worthwhile.

Which Nissan Altima L34 cars are affected by the VC-Turbo engine recall?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall record for 25V-437 lists the 2019 and 2020 Nissan Altima L34 with the 2.0-litre VC-Turbo engine; NHTSA’s July 2025 investigation closing report describes the recall as covering 2019–2021, so check a 2021 VC-Turbo by VIN. The 2.5-litre engine is not part of it.

Can I check US recalls for a Nissan Altima L34 registered in the UAE?

Yes, for an Altima built for the US market: the VIN search of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows unrepaired US recalls, though NHTSA says it will not show a recall involving an international vehicle. Ask Nissan’s UAE agent whether it will carry out the repair.

Does Nissan’s US warranty cover an imported Altima L34 in the UAE?

Nissan North America’s warranty does not apply once a car is relocated outside the US, its territories and Canada, apart from touring outside those countries for up to 60 days. Ask the seller and Nissan’s UAE agent what cover, if any, applies.

How these figures are calculated (2026-03-13 to 2026-10-15)
  • Aggregated, anonymised VINCheckr checks. Repeat checks of one VIN count once (latest check); reused reports are excluded.
  • Model figures count only checks whose make, model and model year map to that generation, leaving out VIN prefixes that mark another model or generation; the all-vehicle figures count every check with a decoded make.
  • A VIN starting with 1–5 carries a North American manufacturer code. Such cars are usually, but not always, built in North America (NHTSA interpretation letter NCC-240821-001, 2024), and the code does not show where the car was first sold or registered.
  • Auction share: checks with at least one listing on bid.cars, plc.auction or carsbidshistory.com. Listings on bid.cars and plc.auction were not searched from 15 May to 7 October 2026, so the true share is likely higher.
  • Accident share: checks with at least one UAE police accident record (Ministry of Interior or Abu Dhabi Police); checks where the MOI lookup timed out or did not complete are excluded. A minimum, not an exact rate.
  • Figures are shown only for groups of at least 100 unique VINs.
