Buying a used Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series (2008–2021) in the UAE
Quick answer
The Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series is the Land Cruiser that Toyota launched in Japan in September 2007 and replaced with the 300 Series, revealed in June 2021. In the UAE it was sold by Al-Futtaim Motors, Toyota’s distributor, in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) form with 4.0-litre V6, 4.6-litre V8 and 5.7-litre V8 petrol engines; a 4.7-litre V8 was sold until the February 2012 update. For a GCC car, ask Al-Futtaim Toyota, with the VIN, for the service and recall record. Gulf News (2012) and Toyota’s US newsroom (2020) describe the 5.7-litre V8 as the only US-market engine, and a recall by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) covers those US cars, never a GCC car. Before paying, check the UAE accident record, inspect the frame on a lift, shift into low range with the car stopped in neutral and match the VIN with the Mulkiya.

The Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series in the UAE
Toyota launched the redesigned Land Cruiser in Japan on 18 September 2007, with a new platform on a full frame and, for Japan, a 4.7-litre V8. Toyota calls the 300 Series “the successor to the 200 Series that debuted in 2007”, and revealed it online on 10 June 2021, in a reveal centred on the Middle East.
Gulf News (2012) and TradeArabia (2015) both call Al-Futtaim Motors the exclusive distributor of Toyota in the UAE, and the Toyota recall notice of the UAE Ministry of Economy (now the Ministry of Economy and Tourism) names Al-Futtaim Motors as the agent. Toyota launched a partial redesign in Japan on 17 August 2015, and TradeArabia reported on 21 October 2015 that Al-Futtaim had introduced the updated car in the UAE, with an eight-speed automatic on the 5.7-litre V8 and Toyota Safety Sense P.
What to check first on a used Land Cruiser 200 Series
- The service record: ask Al-Futtaim Toyota, with the VIN, for the dealer history. Toyota’s general-market manual lists an additional maintenance schedule for cars used on dusty, rough or muddy roads, or heavily loaded, for example when towing a trailer.
- Recall campaigns: Toyota UAE’s recall page offers a search by VIN and says that a Toyota made between 2002 and 2017 may be subject to a Takata airbag inflator recall. Ask which campaigns applied to the car and whether the work was done; the Ministry of Economy oversees recalls with manufacturers and their UAE agents.
- Police accident history: the e-services of the Ministry of Interior (MOI) and of Abu Dhabi Police each offer an accident inquiry by chassis number, which also covers a car bought from another emirate.
- The underside: Toyota says to inspect the car after each day of off-road driving, so look for scrapes, bends and leaks.
- The four-wheel drive: shift between H4 and L4 only with the car stopped in neutral, waiting for the low-range indicator, and ask for the centre differential lock to be shown on sand or gravel, not on tarmac.
- Modifications: Toyota’s manual says the car should not be modified with non-genuine Toyota products, and that damage resulting from a modification may not be covered under warranty.
Common Land Cruiser 200 Series problems by system
This section draws on Toyota’s general-market 200 Series owner’s manual (publication OM60R59W), a late edition whose region table is current as of August 2019 and which lists no 4.7-litre engine, so details for earlier cars may differ. It has notes for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The section also draws on the records of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the US-market Land Cruiser, model years 2008–2021, retrieved on 14 October 2026 under both names NHTSA files it by, “LANDCRUISER” and “LAND CRUISER”: 44 complaints, and a complaint is a US owner’s report, not a confirmed defect.
Engines and fuel
Toyota’s general-market manual lists three petrol engines: the 5.7-litre 3UR-FE V8, the 4.6-litre 1UR-FE V8 and the 4.0-litre 1GR-FE V6, plus a 4.5-litre 1VD-FTV turbo diesel V8 for other markets. TradeArabia’s 2015 report lists the 4.0-litre V6, 4.6-litre V8 and 5.7-litre V8 for the UAE; Gulf News in early 2012 listed the engines then on sale, a 4.0-litre V6, a 4.7-litre V8 and a 5.7-litre V8, and rated the GCC 5.7-litre V8 at 360 horsepower against 381 for the US car. DriveArabia reported that the February 2012 update brought a new 4.6-litre V8 replacing the 4.7-litre. For GCC countries, the manual asks for petrol of research octane number 95 or higher in every petrol engine.
For the US-market Land Cruiser, NHTSA recalls 20V-012 (2014–2015 model years) and 20V-682 (2018–2019) cover a low-pressure fuel pump inside the tank that may fail, so that the engine can stall while driving; US dealers replace the pump. No official source we found says whether GCC-market cars share the affected pump, so ask Al-Futtaim Toyota, with the VIN, whether any fuel pump campaign applies.
Automatic transmission and four-wheel drive
DriveArabia reported that after the February 2012 update the GCC V6 came with a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual, and the 4.6 and 5.7 V8s with a six-speed automatic; TradeArabia reported that from late 2015 the 5.7-litre V8 came with an eight-speed automatic. It says to use only Toyota Genuine automatic transmission fluid “ATF WS”, because other fluid may damage the transmission, so ask for the fluid record.
The four-wheel drive control switch has H4 for normal driving and L4 for steep hills, off-road driving and hard pulling in sand or mud. To change range, Toyota says to stop completely, select N and hold the switch until the low-range indicator comes on or goes off; moving the gear lever earlier can leave the car free to roll, even in P. Toyota says to lock the centre differential, where fitted, only when the wheels are stuck or the surface is slippery or bumpy, to unlock it on dry, hard roads and never to press the switch while turning; the rear differential lock, where fitted, is for a spinning wheel in a ditch or on a slippery or ragged surface, at no more than 8 km/h. An indicator that keeps blinking after a retry is a fault Toyota says needs a dealer.
Suspension, wheels and tyres
Some cars have 4-Wheel Active Height Control suspension, which adjusts the ride height; Toyota’s manual says that on a fault it usually switches to normal mode and shows a warning, and cannot be used until the fault is fixed. The manual also says any tyre over six years old must be checked by a qualified technician, even if it has seldom been used, so read the date codes.
Heat, cooling and towing
Toyota’s manual warns that towing a loaded trailer up a long, steep incline in temperatures above 30°C may overheat the engine; if the temperature gauge shows overheating, turn off the air conditioning, leave the road and stop.
The manual’s weights table gives a towing capacity of 3,500 kg with trailer brakes and 750 kg without, from testing at sea level, and does not split the figure by market; Toyota’s US newsroom gave 8,100 pounds (about 3,670 kg) for US-market cars from 2016. Ask Al-Futtaim Toyota to confirm the figure for the car’s model code, and look for tow-bar wear on a car said never to have towed.
Airbags and seat belts
Two airbag recalls list US-market Land Cruisers, 18V-887 (certain 2008–2019 cars) and 17V-548 (certain 2008–2016 cars); the table below says what each covers. In owner reports to NHTSA, several US owners said in 2019 that their dealer had no parts for the 18V-887 repair. In Qatar, Gulf Times reported in October 2017 a Ministry of Economy and Commerce recall of 2007–2015 Land Cruiser 200 Series (LC200) cars over a possible front passenger airbag defect. On any car, check that the airbag light goes out after starting and ask the agent which campaigns apply.
Land Cruiser 200 Series problems by model year
No official source we found lists the UAE recall campaigns for the 200 Series: when we read it on 14 October 2026, the UAE Ministry of Economy’s Toyota recall-details page showed a single notice, for the 2022 Toyota Raize, and is not a full list of its Toyota campaigns. The Qatar campaign above is not a UAE notice. Ask Al-Futtaim Toyota, with the VIN, for the car’s recall record, and use Toyota UAE’s VIN recall search.
The table covers the US-market Land Cruiser only, from NHTSA records retrieved on 14 October 2026; it says nothing about recalls on a GCC-market car. How severity is rated: each recall counts against the complaint category NHTSA files its component under. High means an NHTSA recall in that category lists that model year; the row shows that category’s complaint count. Medium means no recall in the category, but a named category (not “unknown or other”) holds 20 or more complaints for that year. Low means neither.

GCC-market Land Cruiser vs an imported one
On a GCC-market car, Toyota’s manual says the VIN, the year of manufacture and the country of origin appear on a Certification Regulation label; cars for other markets carry a manufacturer’s label instead. A US-market Land Cruiser was built to different rules: Toyota’s US newsroom describes the 5.7-litre V8 as its only engine, and US rules require a certification label that a GCC car may not carry.
For a Land Cruiser brought from the US, NHTSA’s VIN search shows unrepaired US recalls, but NHTSA says it will not show a recall involving an international vehicle, so ask Al-Futtaim Toyota whether it will carry out a US campaign on the car. VINCheckr’s recall section lists NHTSA’s US recalls for the model and year, not the campaigns on a GCC-market car or whether a recall is open on this VIN; for a GCC car, take it to Al-Futtaim Toyota as a list of questions.
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) spec vs US spec: what actually differs
How to check a Land Cruiser 200 Series’ accident history
The e-services sites of the Ministry of Interior (MOI) and Abu Dhabi Police both list, among their public services, an accident inquiry by chassis number. VINCheckr searches the UAE accident records available to it, from MOI and, during periods when MOI cannot be reached, Abu Dhabi Police; a clean result means no accident was found in those records, not that the car was never damaged.
For a Land Cruiser brought from the US, VINCheckr searches bid.cars, plc.auction and carsbidshistory.com and links to any listing it finds, with photos where the listing has them. A listing shows the car was offered at a US auction at least once; its title and damage fields show whether it was sold as salvage.
How to check the mileage
No public UAE source we found offers a single odometer history, so compare every reading; dated service records from Al-Futtaim Toyota are the strongest evidence for a GCC-market car. On a car brought from the US, the odometer and its US paperwork may read in miles, so convert before comparing, and check the title and odometer data in a National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) report, sold by the approved providers listed on vehiclehistory.gov for up to about $4, the US Department of Justice says.
VINCheckr adds European mileage readings where available, from registers and sales listings; they are rare for cars that have spent their life in the Gulf, so treat “no readings found” as no data rather than proof of a correct odometer.

Enter the VIN to check available accident, auction and recall records, plus European mileage readings where available.
Where to find the VIN on a Land Cruiser 200 Series
Toyota’s general-market manual puts the VIN on the top left of the dashboard and the front right of the chassis frame on some models, and, on a GCC-market car, on the Certification Regulation label, on the door pillar in Toyota’s drawing. Toyota UAE says it is the chassis number on the registration card (Mulkiya). Compare every VIN you find; a mismatch is a reason to stop.
Land Cruiser 200 Series inspection checklist
- Read the VIN from the windscreen plate and the frame stamping where fitted, and from the door-pillar label, and check each against the Mulkiya.
- Give Al-Futtaim Toyota the VIN and ask for the dealer service history, the recall campaigns done on the car and any still outstanding.
- Run the MOI or Abu Dhabi Police accident inquiry on the chassis number.
- From a cold start, confirm that the airbag light and every other warning light go out.
- With the car stopped in N, select L4 and back to H4, waiting each time for the low-range indicator before moving the gear lever; ask for the centre differential lock to be shown on sand or gravel, not on tarmac, and check that no indicator keeps blinking.
- On a car with Active Height Control, parked on level ground with nobody under or near it, select high, normal and low a few seconds apart and watch for a warning message; Toyota says high is for rough roads only.
- Take a 30-minute drive that includes a motorway stretch and a long climb, and note any harsh shifts or rising temperature.
- Back in traffic, idle with the air conditioning on until both fans run, and keep an eye on the gauge.
- Put the car on a lift and look at the frame rails, recovery points and underbody for sand-driving scrapes, bends and leaks.
- Check each tyre’s date code against Toyota’s six-year rule, and ask who fitted any lift kit, larger wheels or tow bar.
- Book an independent pre-purchase inspection before any money changes hands.
Frequently asked questions
Which engines does a GCC-market Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series have, by year?
A Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series has one of four petrol engines, depending on its year. Gulf News listed a 4.0-litre V6, a 4.7-litre V8 and a 5.7-litre V8 in early 2012; DriveArabia reported that the February 2012 update replaced the 4.7-litre V8 with a new 4.6-litre V8; and TradeArabia reported that from late 2015 the 5.7-litre V8 came with an eight-speed automatic. Check that the engine number and model code match the papers, and ask Al-Futtaim Toyota, with the VIN, for the service record.
Are US-market Land Cruiser recalls valid for a Land Cruiser 200 Series sold new in the Gulf?
US recalls by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) do not apply to a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series: each covers the US vehicles it names, such as certain 2008–2019 US-market Land Cruisers in airbag recall 18V-887. NHTSA’s VIN search does not show recalls involving international vehicles either, so ask Al-Futtaim Toyota, with the VIN, which campaigns applied, and use Toyota UAE’s recall search.
Has any Gulf regulator recalled the Land Cruiser 200 Series?
Yes, in Qatar: Gulf Times reported a 2017 recall of 2007–2015 Land Cruiser 200 Series cars over a possible front passenger airbag defect. No official source we found lists UAE campaigns for the 200 Series, so ask Al-Futtaim Toyota, with the VIN, for the car’s recall record, and use Toyota UAE’s VIN recall search.
Is a Land Cruiser 200 Series first sold in another Gulf country a GCC-market car?
A Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series first sold in another Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country was sold and recalled through that country's Toyota agent, not Al-Futtaim; Gulf Times named Abdullah Abdulghani & Bros as the agent in Qatar's 2017 Land Cruiser 200 Series airbag recall. Ask the seller for that agent's service and recall record, and give Al-Futtaim Toyota the VIN as well.
How much can a Land Cruiser 200 Series tow?
Toyota’s general-market manual gives 3,500 kg with trailer brakes and 750 kg without, not split by market; Toyota’s US newsroom gave 8,100 pounds (about 3,670 kg) for US-market cars from 2016. Ask Al-Futtaim Toyota to confirm the figure for the car’s model code, and check a car that has towed for hitch wear.
