Where to find the VIN on a Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series
Quick answer
Toyota’s general-market manual for the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series shows the VIN in three places. On some models it is stamped on the top left of the instrument panel, read through the bottom of the windscreen by the left windscreen pillar, the driver’s side. It may also be stamped on the front of the right-hand chassis frame, just behind the front wheel in Toyota’s drawing. It is also on a label on a door pillar: on a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market car this is the Certification Regulation label, which also gives the year of manufacture and the country of origin. The manual is a late edition (its region table is current as of August 2019), so a 2008–2015 car may differ. On a Land Cruiser that has one, the frame stamping is the number to find before you pay: it must match the Mulkiya (registration card).
Location 1: the VIN on the top left of the dashboard
Toyota’s general-market Land Cruiser 200 Series owner’s manual (publication OM60R59W), which Al-Futtaim Motors, Toyota’s UAE distributor, hosts and which has notes for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, says that on some models the VIN is stamped on the top left of the instrument panel. In Toyota’s drawing a plate sits at the base of the windscreen, beside the left windscreen pillar, seen from outside at the front left of the car: the driver’s side on a left-hand-drive car such as a UAE Land Cruiser. Read it through the glass. Toyota UAE’s recall page also points owners to the windscreen for the VIN.
The manual is a late edition: its region table is “current as of August 2019”, and it covers the eight-speed automatic that TradeArabia reported arriving in the UAE with the late-2015 update. No official source we found shows the identification points of a Land Cruiser 200 Series built before that update, and the manual says “on some models” anyway, so an early car without a dashboard VIN is not proof of a problem. Ask Al-Futtaim Toyota, with the chassis number from the Mulkiya, where the VIN should be on that car.
Location 2: the Certification Regulation label on the door pillar
Toyota’s manual says the VIN is also on the Certification Regulation label on cars for the GCC countries (Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait), Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan, and on a manufacturer’s label on cars for other markets. On the GCC label it also shows the year of manufacture and the country of origin. The manual names no pillar or side, but in Toyota’s drawing the label sits on the centre pillar, below the latch striker of the front door, with the front seat to the left of the pillar: the left-hand side, the driver’s side of a left-hand-drive car. Open the driver’s door and look there first.
The same label carries the model code. Toyota’s weights table depends on it, giving a different front axle capacity for model codes that end in “W” and “Q”, so note the model code alongside the VIN. A Land Cruiser built for the US instead carries the US safety certification label, which US rules require next to the driver’s seat; that rule is US-only, and a GCC-market car need not carry such a label.
Location 3: the VIN stamped on the right-hand chassis frame
Toyota’s manual says that on some models the VIN is also stamped on the front right of the frame. In Toyota’s drawing the stamping is on the side of the frame rail just behind the front wheel, between the mud flap and the tyre. On a left-hand-drive car the right is the front passenger side, so crouch beside the front passenger door and look into the rear of the right front wheel arch with a torch. Underbody coating, sand and mud can hide this area, and the manual says it is forbidden to cover, paint, weld, drill, alter or remove the VIN, so brush or wipe the spot clean rather than scraping it.

How to read a Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series VIN
A Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series VIN has 17 characters, and the first three are the manufacturer identifier, commonly called the world manufacturer identifier (WMI). The register of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) records JTM, for multipurpose passenger vehicles, among Toyota Motor Corporation’s identifiers, with Japan as the country, and the partial VINs in NHTSA’s complaint records for US-market Land Cruisers of the 2008–2021 model years, filed as “LANDCRUISER” up to 2014 and “LAND CRUISER” after, almost all begin with JTM: 37 of 38. The first character is a region code, not proof of where a car was built or sold: NHTSA said in a 2024 interpretation letter that a manufacturer identifier need not show the country of manufacture.
For a car built to US rules, position 9 is a check digit, position 10 the model year and position 11 the plant. Decoding the 11-character patterns from those complaint records, not real VINs, NHTSA’s free decoder reads F in position 10 as 2015, G as 2016 and M as 2021, and reads these three patterns (2015, 2016 and 2021) as a Land Cruiser of series URJ200L with the 5.7-litre 3UR-FE V8, built at Toyota Auto Body’s Yoshiwara plant in Toyota City, Japan; patterns from earlier model years in the same records decode to other Toyota plants in Japan. Gulf News’s 2012 report and Toyota’s 2019 US release for the 2020 model describe the 5.7-litre V8 as the only US-market engine for the 2013 and 2020 model years.
Those position rules come from Part 565, a US federal regulation. No official source we found sets out how Toyota codes the VIN of a GCC-market Land Cruiser 200 Series, or says that its 9th, 10th and 11th characters follow the US check-digit, model-year and plant rules. Do not reject a GCC car’s VIN only because a US-style decode or check-digit test fails, and do not date the car from position 10; read the year of manufacture on the Certification Regulation label and ask Al-Futtaim Toyota what the VIN means.
Why every Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series VIN must match
Toyota’s manual calls the VIN the legal identifier and the primary identification number of the car, used in registering its ownership, and Toyota UAE says it is the chassis number on the Mulkiya, the registration card. The dashboard VIN, the frame stamping and the door-pillar label should therefore all show the same 17 characters as the Mulkiya. On a GCC-market car, also compare the year of manufacture on the Certification Regulation label with the model year the seller gives you. A gap of one year is common, because a model year can start in the previous calendar year; a larger gap needs an explanation. The engine number is separate: Toyota stamps it on the engine block, in a place that differs between the 5.7-litre, 4.6-litre, 4.0-litre and diesel engines, and it is a different number from the VIN.
On a Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series, treat a frame stamping that disagrees with the windscreen VIN, fresh paint, coating or weld marks on the frame rail behind the right front wheel, or a door-pillar label that has been peeled, re-stuck or looks newer than the paint around it as a reason to stop. Put the car on a lift for an independent inspection of the right-hand frame rail, get the seller’s explanation in writing, and keep your money until the emirate’s traffic authority is satisfied.
What to do if a Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series VIN is damaged or different
No official UAE source we found sets out what happens to a Land Cruiser whose frame stamping, door-pillar label and Mulkiya do not agree, so there is no official procedure to quote here. Before any money changes hands, take the Land Cruiser and its Mulkiya to the traffic authority of the emirate where it is registered, such as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, or to the police, and ask whether the car can be transferred with its numbers as they read. The RTA describes its technical inspection as mandatory and as a check of roadworthiness at approved centres, with re-inspection after a failed test and a route to appeal the result. Toyota’s manual says it is forbidden to alter or remove the VIN, so never have a frame re-stamped or a label replaced privately.
On a Land Cruiser brought from the US, also compare the VIN with the US certification label on the driver’s door pillar or door edge and with the import papers. Every US-market pattern we decoded reads as the 5.7-litre V8, and Gulf News and Toyota’s US releases describe it as the only US engine for the 2013 and 2020 model years, so a car sold to you as a US import with a V6 or a 4.6-litre engine needs an explanation.
Frequently asked questions
Which side of the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series frame is the VIN stamped on?
The Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series VIN is stamped on the right-hand side of the frame, on some models: Toyota’s manual says “front right frame”, and its drawing shows the stamping just behind the front wheel. On a left-hand-drive car that is the front passenger side, so look behind the right front wheel with a torch and clean the spot gently.
What does the Certification Regulation label on a GCC-market Land Cruiser 200 Series show?
On a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series, the Certification Regulation label shows the VIN, the year of manufacture and the country of origin, and Toyota’s manual says it also carries the model code. Toyota’s drawing puts it on the centre pillar below the front door’s latch striker. Compare each item with the Mulkiya and the seller’s description.
Why do US-market Land Cruiser 200 Series VINs start with JTM?
JTM is one of Toyota Motor Corporation’s manufacturer identifiers for multipurpose passenger vehicles in the register of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), recorded with Japan as the country, and 37 of the 38 partial VINs of US-market 2008–2021 Land Cruisers in NHTSA’s complaint records begin with it. The first character is a region code, not proof of where the car was built or sold, so check the car’s papers too.
Is the chassis number on the Mulkiya the Land Cruiser 200 Series VIN?
Yes: Toyota UAE says the VIN is the number on your Mulkiya, also called the chassis number, and on the windscreen of the car. On a Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series, compare the Mulkiya’s chassis number with the dashboard VIN, the frame stamping and the door-pillar label, and stop if any differs.
Does a 2008–2015 Land Cruiser 200 Series have the VIN in the same places?
No official source we found confirms it: the general-market Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series manual we used is a late edition, whose region table is current as of August 2019, and it marks the dashboard and frame stampings “on some models”. On an earlier car, ask Al-Futtaim Toyota, the UAE distributor, with the Mulkiya’s chassis number, where the VIN should be.
